October Scout Notes 2005
At three o clock last Sunday the cubs and scouts gathered in Glenshelane before heading off in the direction of Melleray scout centre. On arrival at the glen everyone had a good look at what was in place with regard to our log cabin. All agreed that progress so far on the project was excellent. It is hoped that within a matter of weeks even more work will have been done and hopefully the project will be finished by the time we celebrate our 75th anniversary next month. The hike to Melleray began shortly after this look around. Some rain started to come down at this point which made conditions underfoot slippy. Kieran with his blood hound got everyone heading off in the right direction. On the way to Melleray some awkward obstacles had to be overcome but they proved of little difficulty to everyone. On arrival in Melleray shortly after four o clock a number of games were played in the half acre as well as the games room, which proved to be a lot of fun. Everyone also paid a visit to the scout museum and the cubs in particular were amazed at the collections on display. It was pointed out to them that the late Jim Hally was the person responsible for having this fabulous collection of scouting memorabilia on display for all to see. Six o clock arrived and cars to ferry the scouts and cubs home were soon filled up and headed back home. Before departing the cubs were reminded that no meeting will be held this Saturday night the 29th because of the holiday weekend. The next cub meeting will be held on Saturday the 5th of November at the usual time of seven. No meeting takes place either for the scouts this weekend as all patrols will be having an overnight in the den. Some details were discussed by the patrols while in Melleray and the patrol leaders will be in contact with their patrol members during the week to finalise dates, times, food and any costs that may be involved.
Attention
The date of Friday the 25th of November as you may be aware is set as the date on which we will hold a celebration to mark seventy five years of scouting in Abbeyside. This event is being billed as a grand re-union of scouts who were members of the troop over any of those years. It is hoped that as many scouts as possible from whatever decade they scouted with Abbeyside will come together at the den on this night at 6.30. From here everyone including the present day scouts will parade to seven thirty mass and back again afterwards to the den. Now is the time for the old scouts to search for that neckerchief you wore to the den and wear it once more with pride! Following mass a buffet meal will be available in the den. Photographs, videos and log books will be put on display for everyone to look at and recall the times spent scouting with the 4th. As the night moves on it is intended that the chat and crack will move to a local hostelry where old times can be remembered over a pint. On the night in question walking in the mass parade is confined to present and past scouts/members, the gathering in the den and afterwards is open to all with a ticket! In order to be able to cater for the large numbers expected on the night and to cover the cost of food, tickets priced at fifteen euro are available from now and can be purchased from any of the following. Jim Shine, Geoffrey Shepherd, Fintan Strain, Vinny O'Mahony, William Whelan, Brian Mulvihill, Brendan Kiersey, Ray Moore, Paddy Murphy, Eammon Terry.
