Patrol Leader Training Report by Joe Conway PL Eagle Patrol
After we had settled in and every one else arrived we were divided up into patrols and told that the theme of the weekend was ‘the pirates of the kidney bean. There were scouts from Ferry bank, Tramore and Abbeyside just to name a few.
After we had our selves divided up we went off to do some compass work. Learning how to take bearings.
After supper at around 12:30 we all headed to bed and were told to go asleep little sleeping was done until around 3:30 as we all got 2 know each others names and what troop were they in.
At around 7:30 am the leaders woke us up for breakfast. When breakfast was over we were summoned to the half-acre and each patrol was given a list of instructions and a saw, an axe, a lot of rope, plastic bag, two pulleys, a shovel, four potatoes, and a ground sheet.
We were sent into the glen and set about completing our tasks which included making a shelter, cooking the chicken and the potatoes over a fire and making a trap which would fall to stop your enemies.
In the evening we had an indoor campfire with no fire for this the troops had to sing a few songs each and have sketch. Daisy the cow featured …………….. best kept a seceret!!!
On Sunday each patrol had to devise a game for the other patrols. After lunch there was a treasure hunt looking for a treasure chest full of sweets. People started leaving at around 2 pm.
Cub Pack News
Cal started the Cub Pack Meeting leading the rest of the Cubs in the saying of the Cub Scout Prayer. As Roll Call was done the Twelve Days Of Christmas ticket books were also collected. The Cub Pack broke up into two teams for some relay games, first a straight forward relay game, then hoping on one leg, then frog/bunny hoping. There was some debate as to who had done each part correctly.
It was time for some test work and the Cub Scout Sign and Salute were explained and a brief history of Scouting was gone through with some of the Cubs paying more attention than others. It was at this stage that one of the Cubs was given the chance to run the meeting but quickly gave this back to the Leaders. The Cubs were told that Scouting worldwide will be one hundred years in 2007 and that the first Scout Camp was in Browne Sea Island, England under the Leadership of Robert Baden Powell or BP as he became known. The first Scout Camp Abbeyside went on was in1931 to Colligan. The Cubs then checked out the other Pegs around the wall showing the Annual Camps up to 2006.
A very short game of crab soccer was played before it was time to finish up the meeting. Sean lead the rest of the Cubs in the saying of the Cub Scout Prayer. Before leaving the Cubs were shown one time when the salute is used.
