Cub Meeting
The Cub meeting on Saturday night began with the Cubs handing in their good deed primers. This is a nation wide event being undertaken by Cubs and Scouts where they do a good deed for someone without reward for their action other than a thank you. The two Cubs who did the most good deeds and had their primers signed, turned out to be Tadgh Prendergast and Adam Dee. Both Cubs received a small prize from the Leaders for their efforts. Following this it was into the committee room to view a number of photographs taken at the recent Civic Reception awarded to the Troop. The Cubs were surprised to see so many very familiar faces as they did not know for example that in some cases their parents or grandparents had attended this occasion. Next it was time to let off some steam so out in the den a few games were played to round off the meeting. At the end of the meeting the Cubs were told about the Orienteering fun day to be held at Melleray Scout Centre this coming Sunday morning the 9th of April. This is a fun event for all the family and as with any orienteering event people may come and take part at any time between 10.30 a.m. and midday. The idea behind this fun event is that a Cub along with his parent or parents or indeed the whole family will come along and have a go at orienteering and also have some fun in the outdoors, while at the same time spending some “quality time” with their family. A note will be given to the Cubs this Saturday night to further explain what will happen on the day. The meeting on Saturday night will be a mufti one, (non-uniform) only neckerchiefs to be worn!

Scouts
The Scout meeting began at the usual time of eight and immediately everyone got down to business. Once subs had been collected the senior patrol were put in charge of sorting out the equipment needed for our upcoming Orienteering family fun day in Mount Melleray Scout Centre. Mean while the other Patrols were busy running around Abbeyside getting as much information as they could in order to complete a series of observation tasks. When everyone arrived back at the den a slide show was next on the agenda. Slides of Annual Camps dating from Bunclody 1979, Killarney 1985 and Chalfont Heights (England) 1996 were viewed. These are just some of the hundreds of slides in our possession which were taken mostly by Scout Leader Cyril O’ Fearghail over a number of years. The earliest slides we have go back as far as the early 1960’s and are a wonderful collection of places and people. It is hoped in the future to show these slides to the public at some organised event. Sunday afternoon saw the Patrol Leaders along with the Leaders heading off to Fota Island Scout Campsite. The Troop intends to hold Annual Camp here this summer from July 22nd to the 30th. This visit was a planning trip so that all could get to have a look at the site and the surrounding location in order to be better able to plan Camp Activities for the summer time. The site lived up to everyone’s expectations and should suit us well for Annual Camp. Following a good look around it was into the cars and on into Mahon Point for a look and a bit of shopping including shopping for camping gear.
Attention
No Scout Meeting takes place this Saturday Night as the Scouts will be departing from the den at midday to go to Waterford airport. The reason for this trip is to undertake the second part of the emergencies Merit Badge. A visit to the Helicopter Rescue Centre has been arranged and this should prove to be quite an interesting experience for all. Scouts should wear their Uniforms/Neckerchiefs and bring some money to get a fast food lunch.

Sunday morning the 9th of April will see the Scouts and Cubs along with their parents and/or families heading to Melleray Scout Centre to take part in the Troop organised Orienteering Fun Day. This will be a small test of fitness and map reading but mainly it is all about having fun. Prizes will be awarded at the Scout Troop and Cub Pack Meetings the following week as times and scores will need to be calculated after the event.
Best of luck to Assistant Scout Leader Kieran Harty who is heading to Cork this weekend to put his sea mariner skills to the test.
