Glenshelane Official Opening
Even with some work still to do we feel it is time to show everyone our Cabin in Glenshelane Scout Campsite. There will be an Official Opening on Sunday 24th 2007, Mass is at three o’clock and everyone is invited along. We would love to see Past Scouts, Leaders, and Parents of Past Scouts, Friends of the 4th, to come along and join us for this special day. There will be a Cup of Tea and maybe even a Sandwich afterwards. Looking forward to seeing you there, tell everyone. Parking will be an issue on the day so we would ask people to either use the Car Park on the other side of the river and stroll away up the path or use the Lyre Bridge way into Glenshelane, there will be stewards out to help with Traffic and Parking. We would ask in the interest of road safety to park sensibly and not to block the road by Glenshelane or block the driveway to Glenshelane Scout Campsite.

Scouts, Cub Scouts and Venture Scouts are asked to be in Glenshelane Scout Campsite for two o’clock in Full and Correct Uniform, if there are any questions contact any of the Leaders they will be able to help you out.

Giant Sleep Over In Aid Of The National Children’s Hospital Tallaght
After some less than pleasant weather during the week, the Cub Scout Pack, Scout Troop, and Venture Scout Group of the 4th Waterford Unit, Abbeyside all headed to Glenshelane Scout Campsite for the first Unit Camp-Out in a long time. They were all brought together as part of Scouting Ireland’s ‘Giant Sleep Over’ in aid of The Nationals Children’s Hospital, Tallaght, Dublin.

The Scout Troop were the first to arrive at one o’clock with the Scouts in two Patrols, Aaron Fraher PL, Tiger Patrol and Tom Aird PL, Wolf Patrol, the rest of the Scouts present were Tony O’Mahony APL, Kevin Brazel APL, Chris James, Declan Leonard, Conor Harty, James Harty, Owen Kirkham, and Ben Cliffe. The Scouts first started with pitching the four Ridge Tents that would be used for the Over Night. The Cub Scout Pack would be using two of the Ridge Tents and the Scout Troop would use the other two.

The Venture Scouts soon made their way up to the Campsite and set about a pioneering project with the Scout Troop. The Venture Scouts built a catapult and the Scouts built a ladder. The Venture Scouts present were Patrick Fennell, Cearbhall Turraoin, Rhys Mitchel, James Wilkinson, and Jack Morrissey. The Venture Scouts pitched Dome Tents at the end of the camping field.
It was time to start cooking dinner, everyone was using open fires, the Venture Scouts were cooking for themselves only and eventually got the fire lighting that right Patrick. The Scouts too struggled to keep the flames going, as some members of the Patrols were not as productive as others at gathering timber off the ground in the woods. But with the Leaders, David, Sandy, Gearoid and Brendan on hand to help out things soon got under way and dinners got cooked. Kieran came along to see how things were going before having to head back home.

Half past seven and the Cub Pack had arrived and Gearoid showed them to their tents where they sorted out their gear for the night. As the Scout Troop and Venture Scout Group tidied up after dinner and did the wash up, David and Gearoid did some fun games with the Cub Scout Pack. Guide Leaders, Jenny and Patty then also joined us along with three of their Guides. The Cubs went into the Cabin where Gearoid had cooked them some supper.

Everyone gathered outside the Cabin shortly after ten to go on a hike, which took the Group up to Lyre Bridge and onto the road and in the top gate and back into Glenshelane following the path back to the campsite.

On arriving back at the Campsite the Campfire was just right for the singing of some songs, some of them new to the Cubs and Scouts but all were in good voice. Muller joined us to keep the singing going. Two songs were also practiced for the Mass during the Opening Ceremony of the New Cabin, on Sunday 24th, Mass is at 3.00pm.

The Campfire was finished at midnight with the Cub Scout Prayer and the Scout Prayer, when the Cubs went to bed and the Scouts sorted out their supper.

Sunday morning brought a variety of alarm calls, Kevin and Conor were up at six though they thought it was ten, the fact nobody else was up did occur to them eventually.

Brendan showed the Cubs how to ‘Brail’ a Ridge Tent to dry the ‘Sod Cloth’ they were also shown the different parts of a Ridge Tent. Sleeping bags were soon tidied away and tents lobbed and packed away.

The big match in Thurles was the main focus today as parents arrived to collect Cub Scouts, Scouts and Venture Scouts. Leaders too were on their way to the match, where a great result will see the Army of fans travel again following a determined display by the Hurlers of Waterford, well done Lads and to all concerned. Finally Sandy and Gearoid took down the flag.

All that was left behind after our visit to Glenshelane Scout Campsite was the beautiful sunshine and a few footprints. Thanks to all the Cub Pack, Scout Troop and Venture Group for making the effort and taking part in this overnight. A big thank you to all the Leaders who give of their time freely.
