21st World Scout Jamboree – 27th July to 8th August 2007
The single theme for all events and activities for the Centenary of Scouting and the 21st World Scout Jamboree is: 2007: One World One Promise.
Brownsea Island is where Scouting started, one hundred years ago. In the first experimental Scout Camp, Robert Baden-Powell mixed together boys from diverse backgrounds. During their eight days together, they learnt to survive in the wild, and how to live by a code of honour. On 1 August 1907, Scoutings Founder Robert Baden-Powell blew his kudu horn on Brownsea Island at 08:00 to open the world’s first Scout camp. 2007, is the 100th Anniversary of Scouting, and Scouts celebrating the past 100 years. 2007 is the dawn of a new century of Scouting, the future of Scouting and look to how we can improve it to meet the needs of even more young people, their families and communities and offer better and bigger Scouting worldwide. We must seize this moment and prepare well in advance to share our successes and achievements.
100 years to the day, on 1 August 2007, every Scout, from every WOSM country, will mark the Centenary and look to the past, present and, most importantly, the future of Scouting. On this very special day on Brownsea Island one Scout from each Country present at the Jamboree will be joined by those at Gilwell and Hyland Park, Jamboree HQ, as well as all around the World in the saying of their Scout Promise. This all happened at 08:00 AM. Members of the De La Salle Scout Pipe Band were invited to take part in this very special Ceremony.
The Scout Promise is the same for everyone in Scouting in Ireland, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venture Scouts, and Leaders. The principles and practice of Scouting Ireland are based on the Scout Promise, Law and Principles. Stated simply they are together a code of living placed before every member of the Association.
Scout Promise
On my honour,
I promise that I will do my best,
To do my duty to God,
To serve my community,
To help other people
And to live by the Scout Law.
Annual Camp 2007 – Larch Hill
Annual Camp had finally arrived, everybody brought their gear down on Saturday Night, and was in their full Uniform. Each Scout was then given their Camp neckerchief and a memento T-Shirt with the Troop logo on the back and the New Scouting Ireland Emblem on the front left pocket, these would be worn when out and about in the City.
Sunday – everyone was at the Scout Den in their full uniform for one thirty, the final few bits of gear were being loaded onto the van. It was out to the field for photos before putting the personnel gear onto the bus and heading to Dublin and Larch Hill. With a quick stop in Carlow for refreshments before, heading on to Larch Hill International Scout Campsite. Once we arrived at Larch Hill it was over to our Campsite for the next seven days ‘The Potato Field’. The Marquee was the first to be pitched and the Patrol Tents followed. Each Patrol cooked up dinner as soon as they had their gear sorted.
Monday – Flag up brought a new day, and our first full day on Annual Camp 2007. everyone was rested after their nights sleep, with a lie in enjoyed by someone, whom we would not like to embarrass. There was still some work to be done on site. The Venture Scouts organised a Flag Pole, using some of their pioneering skills. After lunch it was into Dublin City, on the161 bus. This went to Nutgrove Shopping Centre. With everyone wearing their camp t-shirt, we were easy to see. Patrols bought their dinner and had a short time to look around the Centre. It was back to site on the bus to cook dinners. All to soon it was time to go to bed.
Tuesday – Today was a busy day, the Ventures were on the Climbing Wall in the morning as the Scouts went on a hike to take in a beautiful view down on Dublin City and Dublin Bay. After everyone had their lunch it was onto the bus to head for Dublin Zoo, this took three bus changes, 161 to Nutgrove, 16A to O’Connell Street, and 10 to Phoenix Park followed by a short walk to Dublin Zoo. Here the Scouts were able to catch a glimpse of the new baby elephant. This was just one of the many animals viewed by members of the 4th. Time as always flies when you are having fun, and it was time to start our journey back to Larch Hill retracing our steps and buses. Time was tight, as the last 161 bus to Larch Hill leaves at 19:40. An earlier night was on for everyone as the start tomorrow was going to be an early on.
