Cub Scout Pack - News & Information
The long wait over the summer break had finally come to an end as the Abbeyside Cub Pack were back in action at the new time of seven fifteen and new day of Thursday. With everyone gathered and ready to go Gearoid talked to the parents of the new Cub Scouts giving them the run down on how the Cub Scout Pack is operated while Marco and Michael took the rest of the Cub Scout Pack out to the field.
A little behind time the Cub Scout Pack formed into their Clans to say the Cub Scout Prayer. It was Patrick who had the honour of saying the first Cub Scout Prayer for the new Scouting Year. Roll Call was then done and anyone that had the Scouting Ireland Activities Consent Form gave this to Gearoid. Some Uniform parts were also organised.
At this stage everyone was given a HI VIS jackets for some time down at the beach. The Cubs were given a number of tasks to complete as Clans. Everyone enjoyed being out in the fresh air, making the most of the good weather.
Back at the den and time was nearly up. There was just time for a quick game before the Cub Scout Pack formed into their Clans for the saying of the Cub Scout Prayer by Patrick.
Gearoid reminded everyone that next weeks meeting is Full Uniform, those who have just joined have six weeks to get their uniform. Just to remind all the Cubs of the Book Reader Badge and Home Help Badge and the parts Gearoid gave you all before you finished up in July, with all the bad weather this summer I am sure that you all had plenty of time indoors to read books and help around the house.
New members are always welcome so if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Cubs have a Parent/Guardian call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. The Cub age is from 8 years to 10½ /11 years. Their meeting night will be on a Thursday night from seven fifteen to eight forty five. If you have any questions before then you can E-Mail the Cubs on cubpack@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Gearoid will get back in contact with you.
Scout Troop – News & Information
Saturday Night had the Scout Troop back at the Scout Den after their few weeks off since they returned from Annual Camp at Larch Hill.
The meeting started at seven with the Scout Troop falling-in in their Patrols for the saying of the Scout Prayer. The Patrols sat at their tables, for ‘Get To Know Your Patrol’. During this Roll Call was done and Scouting Ireland Activity Consent Forms collected, those who had not brought theirs were reminded to bring them next week.
It was then out to the field where the Patrols put their knowledge of the Scout Knots to the test, each Scout had to do the, Thumb Knot. Figure of Eight, Reef Knot, Bowline, Sheet Bend, and Clove Hitch. Most were able to do the Knots and those who had any difficulty where shown how to do them first by the members of their Patrol and then again by the Leaders. Everyone was happy with what they were shown and learned something new, we will be revising these Knots again over the coming weeks, and then we will do some of the Pioneering Knots before getting each Patrol to undertake a Pioneering Project in Glenshelane.
Back in the Scout Hall and the Troop did some ‘Drill’ movements to get everyone back into where their, right and left was. The Scout Troop was then broken into two teams of seven for a game of Volleyball with an improvised net, it was Joe’s Team that won. They played a ten-minute game of two five-minute halves.
The Troop then formed a circle with chairs along with the Leaders as Brendan explain what was next going to happen, it was a game of switch which proved to be great fun giving everyone a laugh.
All to soon it was coming to the end of the meeting, the Troop Formed into their Patrols for the Final Notices, where a weekend in October, Annual Camp 2008, where amongst things talked about a Court Of Honour was to be held after the Scout Meeting with the Patrol Leaders.
The Scout Prayer was said to finish the meeting. Everyone was reminded of the Parents Meeting next week at eight thirty.
If there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Scouts have an adult call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. The Scout age is from 10½ years to 15/16 years. Scout Meetings will still be on a Saturday night from seven to nine. If you have any questions about Scouts before we return in September you can E-Mail us at scouttroop@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Brendan will get back in contact with you.
