Cub Scout Pack - News & Information
Patrick started this weeks meeting with the saying of the cubs scouts prayer after which subs were taken up by Cearbhall who was along to help run the meeting. First game of the night was a couple of relay races to get the blood warmed up as it was a bit chilly outside. This did the trick nicely as some of the cubs soon wanted to take their uniform jumpers off but Gearoid told them to put them back on as it was a uniform meeting. Michael then played a knockout game of NE, SE, NW and SW with the cubs with Jordan Corby being the winner here.
It was then time for some badge work and the cubs wrote down some "Good Deed Ideas" for the community, some of which the leaders will pick after Christmas as part of the Bronze Arrow badge. The cubs then drew a map of the inside of the den aimed at improving their map work, which also seemed to be a big improvement on last week. A few card relay games were then played to release some more energy before the cubs were each handed out the "Twelve Days of Christmas" raffle tickets. Brendan then explained that the sale of the tickets would go to the troop and the cubs would probably go for a day out similar to the one we had at the end of this summer. Any further questions to contact Gearoid and the ticket stubs and money to be returned to Gearoid by Dec.2nd. Patrick then said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.
New members are always welcome so if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Cubs have a Parent/Guardian call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. The Cub age is from 8 years to 10½ /11 years. Their meeting night will be on a Thursday night from seven fifteen to eight forty five. If you have any questions before then you can E-Mail the Cubs on cubpack@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Gearoid will get back in contact with you.
Scout Troop – News & Information
The meeting this week was a lot more relaxed as the Scouts sorted out the gear and tables required for the Indoor Cooking Competition the following day.
If there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Scouts have an adult call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. The Scout age is from 10½ years to 15/16 years. Scout Meetings are on a Saturday night from seven to nine. If you have any questions about Scouts you can E-Mail us at scouttroop@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Brendan will get back in contact with you.
There will be no Scout meeting this coming Saturday Night.
Indoor Cooking Competition
On Sunday 25th November the Annual Indoor Cooking Competition took place in the Scout Den with two Patrols taking part. The was the Eagle Patrol with Chris James, Conor Lawless, Owen Kirkham, Malachy Lawless, Conor Harty, Ben Ryan, & Sean Kiely. Tiger Patrol was Aaron Fraher, Tom Aird, Tony O’Mahony, Declan Leonard, Dylan Lawless & James Harty. Also present were two of the Clan Leaders from the Cub Scout Pack, Patrick Dunphy & Cal Franklin.
Everyone started to gather in the Scout Den before half twelve to start cooking at quarter past one. After a small chocolate disaster, at the Eagle Patrol Corner, which they quickly recovered from. Soon the smells that filled the Scout Hall danced on the senses as the various flavours mixed in the air.
The Eagle Patrol menu consisted of a Fruit Salad Appetizer, Vegetable Soup Starter, with a Main Course of Murgh Makhani, (Sautéed chicken in a Makhani sauce on a bed of boiled rice), followed by a Chocolate Mousse (whipped cream folded into melted chocolate) Dessert, with Tea or Coffee and Shortbread Cookies.
The Tiger Patrol menu started with an Appetizer of Crackers & Cheese, Tomato Soup with Brown Bread a Main Course of Chicken with Pasta and fresh Tomato Sauce served with Cherry Tomatoes, Peppers and Mangetout (snow peas), a Desert of Freshly Cooked Pancakes with Melted Chocolate toped of with Tea or Coffee and Chocolate Biscuits.
Patrick and Cal helped Gearoid and Eammon with the tasting of food as they marked each Patrol on a range of topics, Presentation, Hygiene, Food Preparation, Patrol Participation, Portion size, Food Wastage, Taste, Patrol Consumption. Both Patrols produced food to a very high standard and only four and a half points separated both Patrols at the end. It was the Tiger Patrol who won.
Well done to all the Scouts who took part in the Indoor Cooking Competition. I would also like to thank all the Leaders who gave up their time to help with the Competition.
