Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Cub Scout Pack Investiture – 20/12/07
The Cub Scout Pack had an Investiture in the Scout Den on Thursday Night 20th December 2007. This was a big night in the lives of 4th Waterford Cub Scout Pack as it saw sixteen of the current cub pack being invested. This was a result of hard work on behalf of the leaders, the parents but more especially on behalf of the cubs themselves who attended meetings, overnights and county events which allowed them to attain what was necessary to be invested. They were joined for the Investiture by their Parents, Brothers, Sisters and Grandparents also present on the night were Group Chairman Jim Shine, Group Leader Brian ‘Muller’ Mulvihill, Scout Leader Brendan Kiersey, Assistant Scout Leader Eamonn Terry, Venture Scout Cearbhall Turraoin, Assistant Cub leader Michael Organ and Cub Leader Gearoid Fraher. Special guests from Waterford Scout County were Brian Fanning, Waterford Scout County P.R.O. and Anthony Purcell, Waterford Scout County Programme Co-Ordinator for Cub Scouts.
The night began with Cub Leader Gearoid welcoming everyone and introducing all the Leaders and Special Guests to the Parents. He then gave a quick description of the first part of the evening, which was the prayer followed by the Cub Scout Investiture itself. The investiture was where all the Cub Scouts in turn came up and took hold of the Abbeyside Group Flag in their left hand, made the Scout Sign with their right and then said the Scout Promise. Following this they went over to a table where Brendan presented them with their Abbeyside Group Neckerchief, Woggle and Abbeyside Group Cap. After this Gearoid then called upon Brian Fanning to present each cub with a scroll to mark the Special occasion. Group Chairman Jimmy Shine then presented 13 of the cubs with ‘Home Help’ and ‘Book Reader’ Merit Badges that they had completed over the last few months. Six of the Cubs were then presented with their ‘Tenderfoot’ Badges. Brendan then presented the Clan Leaders and Assistant Clan Leaders with their Sixer and Seconder Badges. Group leader Brian Mulvihill and Anthony Purcell presented the Clans with their new Clan Badges. Gearoid then made a small presentation to Brian and Anthony from Waterford for making the trip and making the occasion extra special. Gearoid then told the parents what was planned for the New Year before Brian and Jimmy made their own speeches. The Cub Scout Prayer was said to end formal proceedings before everyone enjoyed tea and coffee and some lovely sponge and buns, which was provided by Mrs. Ann Walsh. A big thank you to everyone who made the night such a success and looking forward to seeing you all in 2008.

The Cubs being invested have completed a number of different tests. Learned to do some Scout knots, learned about Scouting and attended a number of Activities.

First of all some of the Scouts were presented with their Patrol Badges which is worn on the right arm of their Uniform just below the shoulder, Tracker Badges were the presented to Scouts who had attained this standard, this is the first stage of the Scout Progress Scheme. It was then on to the winners of this years Annual Camp Cooking Competition, each Patrol Member, was given a set of non breakable eating gear. The winning Patrol was the Eagle Patrol, Joe Conway Patrol Leader, Kevin Brazel Assistant Patrol Leader, Conor Lawless, Chris James, Conor Harty, Malachy Lawless, & Owen Kirkham, Joe was also presented with a flask for being the Patrol Leader. Next it was on to the main Awards of the Night those being ‘Scout Of The Year’ and ‘Patrol Leader Of The Year’, before these were presented Brendan talk about the Awards and how difficult it is to pick out somebody for these Special Awards. Group Leader Brian ‘Muller’ Mulvihill was on hand to present the Awards, he spoke of how it was a very close decision it was between several of the Scouts for the ‘Scout Of The Year’ and this years winner was Declan Leonard, Brian presented Declan with an Engraved Medallion and a Special Sky Blue Polo Shirt with the Group Badge Embroidered onto it. It was then onto ‘Patrol Leader Of The Year’ this is even harder to decide as it is between fewer Scouts involved, the winner this year is Patrol Leader Aaron Fraher of the Tiger Patrol, Aaron was presented with an Engraved Medallion and an Embroidered Sky Blue Polo Shirt. Brian then went on to thank all the Leaders for the time and effort that they put in during the past year.
