Scouting Ireland Has Elected New Chief Scout

During August Chief Scout Martin Burbridge announced that he was stepping down as Chief Scout of Scouting Ireland. The National Management Committee has announced the election of Michael John Shinnick as the new Chief Scout to hold the position until the end of National Council 2009. Michael John Shinnick is currently Chief Commissioner, Adult Resources. He will take up the appointment with effect from 12.00 midnight on Sunday 28 September 2008 from Mr Martin Burbridge who has been Chief Scout for the past five years. The 4th Waterford, Abbeyside would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Michael John Shinnick and to wish him every success in his up and coming role. Michael John Shinnick opened the new Cabin in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin last year. We would also like to thank Martin Burbridge for the work he has done for Scouting Ireland and wish him the best in the role he takes up with the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

Scouts: Prepared to build and sustain peace

The United Nations' International Day of Peace - marked every year on September 21 - is a day when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace. Scouts worldwide are encouraged to participate in marking this special day in every corner of the globe.

Every Peace Day event provides an opportunity to inspire individuals and empower communities to celebrate victories for peace that have been won throughout the year, and to rededicate our commitment to work for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world all year long.

In 160 countries around the world, Scouts build and sustain peace on a daily basis in what is one of Scouting's core values. “Peace Day” is a day to reflect upon the Scout Promise and Law, to share what is being done globally in the field of peace education and motivate others to have the courage to make a difference - a day to share inspirational projects, lead activities and participate in special events.

Annual Camp 2008

Part Four

Thursday our second last day!! Today was not as sunny to begin with though it still was warm, clouds could be seen in the sky and there was even a chance we may have rain. The usual morning routine was gone through before heading to the café to get our bus which we were sharing with another JEKA group, not scouts, from Belgium to ‘Water World Lloret’ an aqua theme park near Girona. This park was a lot bigger than ‘Isla De Fantasia’ which we visited on our first day in Spain. Again there were slides, loops, tubes, inflatable’s and pools of all sorts to choose from. There was also ‘Crazy Golf’ if you were brave enough or for the really brave there was the ‘Bungee Jump’ here Marco and Cathal flew the flag for the 4th, rather them than me. The different attractions included ones for young and old like X-Treme Mountain an incredible Big Dipper, over 260 m long and full of frightening ups and downs. The course –more than 2 minutes- takes you in a boat for 2 persons to a sensational aquatic descent. Water Mountain The Big Dipper of Europe. It is like the classical Big Dipper, but in an aquatic version. 250 m up and down with turns and curves in the dark. Enjoy yourself in the company of a friend, as the boats are for two persons. You will feel the refreshing sensation together. Rafting River, the biggest aquatic attraction in Europe for everybody to enjoy. This is the new sensation…! You let the river take you in a round boat for four persons. 155 m of the 215 m of the attraction are in the dark. And without expecting it, you will suddenly turn 360º and you´ll get wet under the waterfalls. Piscina d'Onades the biggest pool, 50 m long and the most… unexpected… You can stay on the soft beach or play in the waves that can reach 2 m. Jacuzzis, the paradise. Pools full of relaxing bubbles and hot water will make you want to stay a bit longer before going back to the sensations of the other attractions. Water Gegant, the endless slide, it will take you through the water current, and in the middle of curves and more curves, you will go down. Don´t think it will never end. Storm a new concept in aquatic attractions, unique in Europe; two big tunnels with a diameter of more than 4 m are waiting for the visitor after his descent of 80 m through a big tube, where he literally feels sucked into the pool by a tremendous water force. Kamikaces, only for the brave, not every one dares to jump down from the steep height of 77 m. In both of them you can reach the speed of 60km/hour, giving you a unique sensation of vertigo. Water Pistes, the soft slides, 4 persons jump at the same time on the straight parallel slides, who will be the first to arrive? Made of a sponge-like material, you will enjoy the descent, fun for everyone. Riu Salvatge the natural level difference makes you feel you are in one of the fastest canyons of the mountains. Water Petit, the slide for little children, this slide was constructed so that also those who don´t like the bigger emotions can enjoy their day in the park. Family Lagoon A lake for the relax of the entire family where the quietness of a small beach. Llac Relax, relax a bit in a quiet zone of the park. Piscines La Calma, a paradise for relaxing and resting. The entire family will enjoy it. Water Ràpid, the most dynamic slide. A sinous course makes you go down in a sensational way through this exciting attraction. Kiddie Island, This new area is for the little ones, a paradise for children. LLac Infantil, a small lake with children´s toys, so that they too will want to return again. Here they learn to enjoy the water. Or soak up some rays while lying out on a sun lounger. The Scouts, Ventures and Leaders enjoy this relaxing day by the pools while getting the occasional adrenal rush from one of the slides, loops, tubes and pools. Everyone had an enjoyable day, a few items were bought at the shop before getting our bus back to Santa Margarida. Back at Cien Biel dinner was rustled up and devoured. We had a final visit from the English Rover Scouts who were also travelling home the following day, Friday, they were to travel home by bus taking nearly 33 hours.

Friday and a relaxing day to begin with before the big clean up was to start. Some Scouts went to the pool for a swim, along with a few Ventures and Leaders while lunch of Spaghetti Bolognese was put together in the very hot kitchen, during Annual Camp the kitchen was always a place of extreme heat when food was being cooked, this was due to its small size and lack of ventilation. When cooking those cooking would often go outside to the heat of the day to cool down!! We were scheduled to leave Santa Margarida at six in the evening and would be home by three in the morning. The last few hours were spent sorting personnel gear and moving them out of the rooms. The rooms and showers were cleaned and swept out ready for the JEKA representative to inspect. We gathered up for the final flag down of Annual Camp 2008, where Section Leaders Gearoid and Sandy did the honours. We then walked down the track for the final time to meet the Bus at the Café, only this time it was for home and Barcelona Airport. We had some time for everyone to get food before heading to the gate to catch our flight, we had a slight delay as there was a problem with some of our baggage, but that was quickly sorted and our flight was on its way. We had missed our time slot, so had to wait until on became available. On arrival in Dublin we had to wait for a rival airline to move from our docking station. Our driver Michael was waiting for us when we came out of the airport, and shortly after as we travelled along the M50 the rain started and continued to fall as we travelled back to the village, on arrival back in Abbeyside we were greeted by the parents and family and of course the rain. The end of another Annual Camp, thoughts of where our next year’s Annual Camp might be? That is for another day and when we have fully recovered from this one completely.

Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Thursday Night Cub Pack Meeting

Our first meeting back after the summer started with Cian saying the Cub Scout Prayer. Gearóid went out the back to talk to Parents of the New Cubs (to explain the role their son would play as members of the Cub Scout Pack), so Brendan, Aaron, Joe and Claire ran the meeting. The Link Badge Cubs were down for their last Cub Scout Meeting before entering the Scout section. A couple of rounds of the relay race followed to see which team would be victorious. As it turned out Seamies team were victorious, because they seeemed to be the only team that could stay at alert. We played several rounds of the game of 4 boxes, which were extremely hectic (as usual), but which everyone enjoyed. After which we went back and did some more team relays, in which we divided the 13 new Cubs into the already made out teams. Brendan collected subs and Gearóid collected registration from all the Cubs that had it. We then sat down and Brendan proceeded to show the new Cubs the layout of the Uniform, and the badges they will be working towards during the year. Gearóid then informed everyone that next weeks meeting will be full uniform. Cian then said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.
