Cub Pack Meeting

It was Eoghan who started this week’s Cub Pack Meeting with the saying the Cub Scout Prayer as the rest of the Cub Pack joined him. Receipts were given out to the Cubs for payment of Annual Registration ‘07, and purchase of Group Neckerchief, Group Cap and Badges. Gearoid did ‘Roll Call’ and as well as collecting any Annual Registration ’07 that were still due.

Tables and chairs were then put out as Gearoid continued with ‘Cyclist Challenge Badge’ that was started a few weeks ago, this part was where the Cubs drew and named the parts of a bicycle. Things that Gearoid will go through with the Cub Pack include puncture repair, adjusting gears, adjusting brakes, replacing a tyre, and replacing a tube. Each Cub present did their best.

Two teams were then gathered from the Cubs present and lined up ready for a new game. This game as Brendan explained how the game was played. It involved a deck of cards and each of the Cubs picking a card and filling it in the ‘Run’ of each suit. One team collecting the red cards and the other team collecting the black cards. First team finished won.

The Cubs formed up into their Clans for the finishing of the meeting and final notices. Any of the Cubs who were interested in attending the Waterford County Cub Scout Quiz in Ferrybank, Waterford on Sunday after noon that we would be meeting at the Scout Den at 13:45 in Full Uniform.

Next weeks meeting is at the usual time from seven to eight and is Full Uniform.

Eoghan finished off the meeting as he started it with leading the rest of the Cubs in the saying of the Cub Scout Prayer.

Scout Group Meeting

After all the Scouts joined in the saying of the Scout Prayer, Gearoid, called the ‘Roll’. Some Scouts having contacted the Leaders they would not be at the meeting being marked excused and those unaccounted for being marked absent.

Each Patrol were given a copy of a map of the Comeragh Mountains by David, there were two views of this area one an exact copy of this OS Map No. 75 1/50 and an enlarged copy showing the area of the Troop Hike on Sunday morning. This was the area of Coumfea.

Sandy talked about the hike. The Scouts were told to be at the Scout Den Sunday morning for nine o’clock.

Everyone was reminded that next weeks Scout meeting is Full Uniform.

The meeting finished up with the saying of the Scout Prayer and the Scouts ‘Falling-Out’, then heading for home.

This is an aerial view of the hike route.

Scout Hike
On a not so warm January Sunday morning the Scouts of the 4th Waterford Unit, Abbeyside gathered at the Scout Den in Sarsfield Street for the first hike of 2007. With some Scouts arriving before Nine O’Clock and then Patrick arrived, lets just say shortly after nine. The hike was being Lead by new Leader Sandy Griffen with Leaders Eamonn Terry, Gearoid Fraher, David Hickey and Junior Leader Michael Organ joining her on the mountain, Brendan was providing base back up, (another word for reading the Sunday Papers).

As we waited in the Den for everyone to arrive Michael (not a morning person) Organ gave everyone a ‘Hi-Vis’ vest. David Hickey arrived with his ‘Jumbo Breakfast Roll’ as he had been told that there would be no pit stops on the way to the start point of the hike.

The Scouts then loaded up into cars driven by John Harty, Patricia Leonard, and Fergal Brazel. Fergal went with the Scouts up the mountain. It was out to the Car Park near Mahon Falls where we were to set out up the Mountains, toady’s hike was based in the Coumfea are of the Comeragh Mountains. Coumfea is the next ridge beside Mahon Falls where the river Tay rises.

After a talk by Sandy on safety the group started on up into the mountains. The going was difficult under foot as the climb went on. With a sharp breeze on the upper ground. The Group made light work of the difficult terrain. Taking breaks when needed as well as a few photos. Stopping on the way down for some well deserved food. Behind time we headed back to the cars where some chocolate bars and drinks were available for everyone. Before heading away Sandy had all the hikers gather in a circle and pat each other on the back for a good mornings hike, well done everyone. Thanks to John, Patricia and Fergal for helping with the transport.

Hikers were: Patrick Fennell, Jack Morrissey, Damien Doyle, Cormac O’Mahony, Kevin Brazel, Kevin Corcoran, Declan Leonard, Chris James, Anthony Drohan, Mathew Kett, Owen Kirkham, James Harty, Aaron Fraher and Marco Hanrahan.

County Cub Scout Quiz
On Sunday the Cub Scout Pack of the 4th Waterford took part in the Waterford Scout County Cub Scout Quiz. This was in Ferrybank Parish Hall, Waterford. There were five Cub Scouts who made the journey to Ferrybank, Eoghan Burke, Ryan Keane, Cal Franklin, Darragh Mc Grath and Conor Foley along with their ‘Monkey’ mascot that Brendan and Gearoid, who came straight from the mornings Scout Hike. Thanks to Conor’s Dad Philip for bringing the Cubs down and back.
