Saint Patrick’s Day Parade
All the planning and phone calls were coming to an end as the date was finally arriving, 17th March Saint Patrick’s Day. The hard work began on Thursday Night with Sandy and Kieran working on the enlarged Unit Badge which was to be a backdrop on the float. On Friday Night a larger group of Scouts, Cubs, Leaders and Parents gathered to put some of the finishing touches to the items that were to go on the float. An array of Scout activities was to be displayed on the float. Balloons were blown up, Kayak was washed out, a Tent was put up, cookers put together along with other items.
On Saturday morning as the Tractor Unit and Trailer arrived, driven by Declan from O’Brien Haulage. Everyone got very busy putting everything on the Trailer. Bunting, Flags and of course all the Balloons decorated the extent of the trailer. Then all the gear was put up, tree logs, a tent, inflatable boat, surf kayak, kayak, cooker, table and flag poles. Everyone headed home for their very quick lunch, and to put on their Full Uniforms.
At half past one everyone was back at the Scout Den in their Full Uniform and almost ready to roll. We had Declan behind the wheel of the Tractor Unit (that is the front part of an artic lorry by the way) and the decked out trailer all we needed now was some people in Costumes, so Kevin, James, James, Conor and Damien got dressed up. And we were ready for the Parade itself. After a long wait in The Burgery the Parade started to very slowly make its way into the Village. During this time the Unit sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Scout Conor Lawless who’s birthday it was that day. Taking the usual route passing large crowds in Abbeyside and the ‘Mad Hatter’ at ‘the old mans seats’. On coming into the square our two new Leaders Gearoid and Sandy were invested as members of the 4th Waterford Unit, Abbeyside, Scouting Ireland, well done to both. Passing the Review Stand the Unit did a Salute.
Those who were on the float were, Cal Franklin, Mathew McCarthy, Eoghan Burke, Ross Mitchel, Tony O’Mahony, Conor Lawless, Ryan Keane, Colm Kennelly, Owen Kirkham, Dylan Lawless, Kevin Brazel, Damien Doyle, James Wilkinson, Conor Harty, Malachy Lawless, Joe Conway, Cearbhall Turraoin, Marco Hanrahan, Ben Cliff, Jordan Cliff, Kevin Corcoran, Aaron Fraher, James Harty, Ruari Conway, Patrick Dunphy, Conor Foley, Darragh Mc Grath, Sean Kiely, Tom Daly and David Sheehan, Leaders, Michael Organ, Sandy Griffin, Gearoid Fraher, Kieran Harty, and Brendan Kiersey. The Unit was joined by County Commissioner Tom O’Neill and his wife Fiona O’Neill, Group Leader 35th Waterford, Dunhill, and their three children.
We would like to thank Eamonn Franklin for getting the Balloons on Friday night, and Declan of O’Brien Haulage or the Truck and his time. Well done to Eamonn Terry for organising the Truck. Well done to all the Leaders, Scouts and Cubs for the time and effort they put in. Thanks to everyone for turning out on the day, and we hope everyone watching enjoyed the day as well.
