Venture Scouts Go Sailing
The Venture Scouts were out and about again this week. On Saturday afternoon, five ventures arrived at Dunmore East Adventure Centre accompanied by leaders Kieran and Sandy. The ventures choice of activity was dinghy sailing and was to a first time experience for each of them.
After meeting instructor Paul and being kitted out with wetsuits and buoyancy aids, it was time to launch the boats and head out across the harbour. With favourable wind conditions and the sun beating down everyone was eager to take to the water.
With a dodgy start and a few 360’s behind them, the lads got the hang of it. The wind picked up a bit however, and Jack and Damien had the first spectacular capsize. The water temperature resulted in the lads righting the boat in record time. The laughs from Cormac, Marco and Patrick in the other boat could be heard from the shore, but this brief lack in concentration saw the boat keel over, dumping the three messers into the sea. It was to be a very eventful two hour session.
Damien Doyle especially took to the sailing after his solo sail due to the brief absence of Jack Morrissey mid-sail. Each Venture Scout thoroughly enjoyed their sailing experience and are talking of planning a return trip. The next few months are expected to be action packed!
Cub Pack Meeting
Starting the Meeting this week was Patrick with the Cub Scout Prayer. Gearoid followed quickly with roll call. We had a smaller turn out this week with First holy Communions in the area.
Some Compass work was then done by Eamonn and Brendan showing the Cub Scouts first the main points on the compass as we use in the Game, North, South, East & West, then the three points in between each main point. These were written on paper and placed on the ground by the Cubs. A Map and a large scale compass was then used to show the Cubs how to line up the map(put the map facing north using the compass).
A relay game was then played of dizzy izzy by Gearoid, which proved to be great fun. This was followed by sticky darts, while the Cubs were waiting to take their turn they got the chance to practice their knots.

As the meeting came close to ending the Cub Scouts were told that the County Fun Day had to be cancelled due to the very bad weather forecast for Sunday. Next weeks meeting is Full Uniform and starts at seven sharp.
Patrick finished the Meeting with the saying of the Cub Scout Prayer. If there are any questions contact Gearoid.
Scout Troop Meeting
The meeting started at eight with Patrol formation and the saying of the Scout Prayer. Roll Call was done after which Brendan announced some changes to Annual Camp 2007, we will have more details for next weeks meeting. He also suggested that each Scout should try and get themselves a pair of hiking boots.
Cearbhall did map work and some navigation with the Scout Troop. This will help for next months programme of activities, which will see the Scout Troop using the Glen for the meetings.
Joe and Aaron did a presentation each for their Leadership Award, well done to both of them.
