Cub Scout Pack - News & Information
Cub Scout Pack Meeting
Our first meeting of the New Year began with Gearoid welcoming our Five New Members and introducing them to the rest of the Cub Pack. He then put each of the New Cubs into their respective Clans before explaining to them what happens at the start of each Meeting, i.e., Clan Formation, Cub Scout Prayer followed by the taking up of the subs money. This was then duly done. We then played a relay game to get everyone into the swing of things after Christmas and to get everyone to know each other. These were tight races between the four clans and had to go to the "video referee" for a decision at times and he even found it hard to make a call. A game of dizzy Izzy was played to decide this one with Clan Cuchullain being victorious. Some badge work was then done to start the New Cubs of in their life with the 4th Waterford. Here we covered the Scout Salute, the different areas of the den that they need to know and also some Drill which is all covered as part of their Tenderfoot Badge and is always good revision for the more experienced Cubs.
We then played the corner game, which proved to be the most competitive game of the night, and was refereed by Michael. After each of the Clans lost their allocated amount of lives the winners were deemed to be Clan Round Tower. We then played the 2008 version of "who stole my chicken?" which is called "who stole my ducky?" , which like the 2007 game proved to be very popular. Gearoid then showed the New Clan Badges to those who didn't get them on December 20th last and told them that as soon as he had more he would be giving them out. He then told everyone that we would be staying overnight in the den in the next few weeks and a notice to that affect would be sent home with the Cubs soon.
Before everyone left the den a rumour had circulated that a certain person with connections to the 4th Waterford may be willing to frame the Certificates that the Cubs got on the night of the Investiture for a nominal fee, mind you it is only a "rumour"!. Final prayer was said and everyone was dismissed.
New Members
New members are always welcome so if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Cubs have a Parent/Guardian call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. The Cub age is from 8 years to 10½ /11 years. Their meeting night will be on a Thursday night from seven fifteen to eight forty five. If you have any questions before then you can E-Mail the Cubs on cubpack@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Gearoid will get back in contact with you.
Scout Troop – News & Information
Scout Troop Meeting
Scouts returned to their normal meeting on Saturday Night last at seven o’clock sharp. This was a Full Uniform meeting, but there were a lot of white socks to be seen. The meeting started as usual with the saying of the Scout Prayer, the Patrols then went to their Patrol Corners to revise Commitment part of the Tracker Badge, (The Scout Prayer, Scout Promise, Scout Motto, Scout Law, & Scout Principles). Eammon did attendance also during this time, Michael collected Annual Registration and Gearoid Collected money for Annual Camp. It was then time for a little fun with a game of North, South, East & West run by Gearoid. A quick check was done on how good everyone had got on at their revision of the Commitment part of the Tracker Badge. The Scout Law, Principles and Promise were discussed and how we use them in our daily lives. Gearoid and Michael first played some relay games and then tried out a game of ‘Who Stole My Ducky’ was played with the Scouts getting a great laugh out of it.
A letter was given to each of the Scouts and this was then discussed, this was to be brought home to each Scouts Parent/Guardian.
The main point of the letter was that those going on Annual Camp to Spain would have to hold a Valid Passport and that their name on the passport and passport number would be needed to book flights to Spain, this is due to Spanish Government Policy.
Activities in the next coming months were also talked about, with the main focus being the Waterford Scout County Fun Weekend on in Mount Melleray Scout Activity & Sports Centre on the weekend of February 15th, 16th, & 17th, theme for this weekend is BAYWATCH (Thanks to David H.). This is always a great weekend, we will have more information about this weekend for next weeks meeting, as there is a Leaders Planning Meeting in Waterford on Wednesday Night.
The meeting finished up with the saying of the Scout Prayer. Next weeks meeting is at seven and is full uniform.
