Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Cub Scout Pack Meeting
Our meeting this week started with Cal saying the Cubs Scout Prayer. This was followed by a game of North, South, East and West, which was organised by Brendan. Some Drill was then practised to make sure we hadn't forgotten what we had learned the previous week. Subs were then taken up before we played the T-shirt relay game organised by Gearoid. This proved to be a very close game between the four Clans with a certain Clan having an objection to wearing one of the T-shirts (its was red) that Gearoid had provided, they soon overcame their problem and it was Clan Cuchullain who were victorious. We then moved on to some Badge Work. Gearoid did such things as the Scout Salute, Robert-Baden Powell, the Cub Scout Motto, Scout Promise and Scout Handshake with the newer Cubs which is all part of their Tenderfoot Badge while Brendan, Michael and Seanie did Map features with the more experienced Cubs which is part of their Bronze Arrow Badge.

We then played the Card Relay Game, which once again was very competitive. Here Clan Round Tower were the winners according to referee Seanie, mind you, his judgement has been questionable at times, especially the previous week! Gearoid then gave out some "good deed" slips to the new Cubs before telling everyone about next weeks meeting and the upcoming overnight in the den. He also told the Cubs that we would be spending five nights under canvas to attain a special Badge and would be doing some work on Tents in the coming weeks a preparation. Cal once again said the prayer and everyone was dismissed.

New Members
New members are always welcome so if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Cubs have a Parent/Guardian call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. The Cub age is from 8 years to 10½ /11 years. Their meeting night will be on a Thursday night from seven fifteen to eight forty five. If you have any questions before then you can E-Mail the Cubs on cubpack@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Gearoid will get back in contact with you.

Scout Troop – News & Information

Scout Troop Meeting
Seven o’clock on Saturday Night brought the start of this weeks Scout Meeting. The Scout Prayer being said by all began the meeting.
While the Patrols went to their corners, they were to revise the Scouting Knowledge part of the Tracker Award, this is in keeping with the theme for this month and next month. They were to go over the Scout Sign, Scout Handshake, and Scout History. Attendance was done by Gearoid, while Michael organised the menu items list for our next cooking night. Ciaran had the New Emblem Uniform Badge, which is worn on the left pocket of the Scout Uniform Shirt. Brendan presented all those present with one of these Badges. The badge should be placed between the button hole on the pocket and the hole for the whistle, so just to confuse everyone further on the right hand side of the Left pocket, ok got that good.
We then moved on to the Cooking Challenge, each Patrol got to pick a card that related to a food item. The Eagle Patrol picked Beef, Rice, Cabbage, Courgette, Peas, and Mushroom. The Tiger Patrol picked Chicken, Noodles, Bean Sprouts, Tomato, Carrot, and Peppers. Using these ingredients the Patrols must come up with a main course that everyone in the Patrol will eat at a meeting in February with a budget of €2.00 per person. They can use other food items should they wish once they keep inside the budget.
Michael played a game of corners with help from Ciaran, for this the Troop was divided into four teams and given a square area in the Scout Hall to protect. If the ball was in their area when the whistle was blown the team lost a life, you are not allowed to kick the ball this also will lose a life for your team.

A relay game using the main knots used in Scouting, Thumb Knot, Figure Of Eight Knot, Reef Knot, Bowline, Sheet Bend and Clove Hitch. Anyone who was unsure of any of the knots were shown how to tie them and then asked to demonstrate it themselves.
The up coming County Fun Weekend in Mount Melleray was spoken about and those interested in going are to let the Leaders know at next weeks meeting.
Each of the Patrols are to have their Menus and price list ready for next weeks meeting.
There will be a Court Of Honour after next weeks meeting for Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders, this is to plan Activities for the next few months.
The meeting finished up with the saying of the Scout Prayer. Next weeks meeting is at seven and is full uniform.

New Members
New members are always welcome so if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Scouts have an adult call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. Venture Scout Group – Information
The Venture Group had their Group meeting on Thursday night, where Annual Registration and money for Annual Camp was collected. Sandy was in charge and spoke to the Ventures about the up coming Waterford Scout County, Venture weekend to the Burren, where ‘Pot Holing’ is on the Activity list. Brendan ask who may be interested in going on Crew in February.
Sandy also informed the Ventures that she is to be missing meetings for the next few months, as she will be going travelling to New Zealand and Australia, (maybe checking out future Campsites). We all wish her the best and look forward to seeing her back around the Scout Den again. Group Leader Brian ‘Muller’ will be taking over while Sandy is away.
You can E-Mail the Venture Group on venturegroup@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Sandy/Brian will get in contact with you.

Annual Camp 2008
Just to remind all those who are going on Annual Camp to Spain that everyone should have paid €100.00 in total this month. Also everyone needs to have a Valid Passport for going on Camp. We only need your Full Name as it appears on your Passport for booking the flights, but because of Spanish Government Policy we will need the Passport Number as we get closer to Annual Camp.
