Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Thursday Night Cub Scout Pack Meeting

The meeting this week started with Conor saying the Cub Scout Prayer. Michael then took up subs. While the Clans were standing at alert Cub Section Leader Gearoid then gave a talk to the pack on the importance of all aspects of respecting our peers with regard to both speech and actions. It was explained that when they say their Cub Scout Prayer at each meeting they say to do their best by helping others and it is also part of the Scout Law, which is on the wall in the Scout Hall. The pack were then reminded that Gearoid would have no hesitation in sending any Cub home that he or any of the Leaders found to picking on or mocking another Cub over how they look or may sound and not letting them back into the den again. He told them that we were all here to get along, learn the Scouting way of life and most importantly to make friends! It was then time to head out into the field and practice pitching our tents for the upcoming county event later in the summer.

Each of the Leaders were given two Clans, with a different Leader pitching a different type of tent. Gearoid pitched his own tent a large dome tent, Brendan a ridge tent that is used mostly in Scouting and Michael a hike tent or dome tent used for lightweight camping or in the mountains. Seanie showed the Cubs how to pitch Meldan's tent or was it the other way around? Once all the tents were packed away Aaron brought the Cubs into the den for a game of dodge ball to finish off the meeting. The Link Badge Clan and Clan Leaders were then told to be at the den on Saturday night between Seven and Eight to join the Scouts pitch tents and to get more experience themselves. Conor then said the prayer and everyone was dismissed.

Scout Troop – News & Information

Saturday Night Meeting

Again this weeks meeting was a non uniform one and started fall in and saying of the Scout Prayer before everyone sat down to talk about the menu for the Waterford Scout County Scout Challenge Weekend, which is on the weekend of April 18th to 20th. This year the Scout Challenge Weekend is a Patrol of twelve Scouts who on the Saturday will be broken into a Mountain Patrol and a Base Camp Patrol. The ‘Mountain Patrol’ will have four Scouts and will be on the Comeragh Mountains in the Mahon Falls area. The ‘Base Camp Patrol’ will have eight Scouts and shall camp in the Stradbally area of the County. All the Scouts are looking forward to the weekend.

The Scouts will be on site from supper on Friday night to lunch on Sunday. The Scouts decided on the following menu for Friday night supper everyone is to bring whatever they want to eat at this time, for breakfast on both mornings each Scout will need to bring whatever cereal that they will eat and should include bread or rolls if they want them also, milk and juice will be bought as a patrol. Lunch for those on base camp will be a fry and for those on the mountain everyone will want a packed lunch with a hot drink or soup. Dinner on Saturday is a test meal and will be cooked on an open fire at base camp and on the Taranga in the mountains, supper again is up to each Scout to bring with them as is their breakfast on Sunday Morning. Those Scouts on Base Camp need to contact Aaron about what cost is involved etc and those in the Mountain Camp should contact Joe to find out what they need to know. A shared system is to be operated for transporting Scouts to and home from Stradbally again contact Joe and Aaron to work this out so that not the same parents are doing all the driving.

It was out to the filed again to get those tents out and yet again checked, practice makes perfect guys. So in between showers we got the tents sorted and we know what we are bringing with us for the county weekend. Back in the den the Scouts looked over the Maps to see the route to be taken on the Mountain stage. The gear was stored away before everyone falling in and being given the final details for the weekend. We will be meeting at the Scout Den on Friday night for 6:45pm to leave for Stradbally when we will pack the gear up. On Thursday night after the Cub Pack meeting the Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders will be down at the den to put out the gear ready for Friday and check it over to be sure we have everything we need. The meeting ended with the saying of the Scout Prayer.

New Members

New members are always welcome so if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Scouts have an adult call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. The Scout age is from 10½ years to 15/16 years. Scout Meetings are on a Saturday night from seven to nine. You can E-Mail the Abbeyside Scout Troop on scouttroop@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Brendan will get in contact with you.

Venture Scout Group – Information

Venture Scout Group

On Friday 11th April the Venture group held an overnight in Glenshelane cabin instead of their regular bi-weekly meeting at the den! Although the weather was a little on the cool side the fact that there is heating in the cabin proved invaluable in keeping everyone’s body temperature above freezing point! On arrival at the glen, a little house work was undertaken followed by an interesting chat with leader Sandy who spoke of some of her interesting adventures in New Zealand and Australia, having just returned home from there in the past few weeks! I think that following this chat, a little “travel the world seed”, may now be germinating in the minds of the lads. Next on the agenda was a trip into nearby Capoquin in order for the ever hungry Marco, Patrick and Rhys to top up on their calorie intake, after all as they explained, “we will need all our energy stores for annual camp in Spain”! As the lads walked through the town of Capoquin someone of the group was heard to remark that they didn’t know Marco was the Mayor of this town as he seemed to know everyone here! On arrival back at the cabin the food was devoured while Muller made the obligatory cup of tea! During the night, apparently and judging by his very loud snoring, Patrick slept the best of the entire group while Marco kept everyone else awake with his story telling all night long.

Saturday morning dawned beautifully if a bit on the cold side in the Glen and having had a good breakfast transport home for the group arrived promptly at nine.

The next scheduled meeting of the Venture group takes place on Saturday 26th of April at eight o clock in the den. Those going on annual camp are reminded that they can pay money towards the cost of their annual camp fee at these meetings. Ideas for the section programme for the upcoming “hot summer months” will be discussed at the meeting. So get the thinking hats on. Once again reminder too that, all members of the Venture section, need and should have full and correct uniform.

You can contact the Abbeyside Venture Scout Group by E-Mail on venturegroup@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Sandy/Brian will get in contact with you.
