Hiking Day in Glenshelane

A one day/overnight event for any Adult Leader of any section (18 years plus) in Waterford Scout County or neighbouring Scout County’s will be held at Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin on Saturday 27^th of December 2008 beginning at ten thirty in the morning. Leaders from the 4^th Waterford “Abbeyside” Scout Group will be on hand to take Leaders on specific hikes in the vicinity of the Campsite which would be suited for the various ages within particular sections. Later on in the evening a Campfire will take place where Campfire Songs will be taught by qualified staff. The only cost involved will be the price of a meal, perhaps €10. Overnight accommodation will be in the Cabin on site or for the hardier out there you may bring a tent and perhaps two sleeping bags for the cold! This will be a fun event!

Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Monday Night Cub Section Meeting

Our Monday night meeting started with some high energy games as the Cubs seemed to have extra energy this week. It was possible they were just happy to have their Leaders back, well one of them anyway, after their absence last week. Aaron and Kevin from the Scout section were on hand to help Sandy with the meeting. Thanks lads.

As most of the games this week were new, we had to go over the rules a few times before everyone got the hang of them. Sandy discussed Badge Work with some of the older Cubs. All Cubs will be starting new Badge Work next week. The next event coming up for the Cub Section is the County Quiz which will be held in the Friary College on Dec 7^th. We will be making teams and practicing for the quiz during our next few meetings. The meeting ended with our Cub Promise and Prayer followed by a few reminders.

Parents and Cubs are to note the new meeting time for Monday night meetings. The meeting will start at the usual time of 7pm but will now finish at 8.15pm. Please attend meetings on time. Cubs are also reminded that they must have Full Correct Uniform for upcoming events. Uniforms must be purchased from the Outdoor Adventure Store (Scout Shop) in Cork, they cannot be ordered from the Leaders.

Thursday Night Cub Section Meeting

Our meeting this week began with Sean saying the Cub Scout Prayer followed by subs being taken up by Section Leader Gearoid. Book reader badge reports were then done by Meldan and Darragh Walsh. This is where both boys read a piece out of one of three books that they have read and then tell the rest of the pack what they thought of the book and also answer questions that the other cubs may have about the books. The pack was the split into three to do so badge work, Mandy doing some Tenderfoot with the new cubs which covers the history of scouting, Gearoid and Claire doing some Bronze arrow work with the next group in the form of knots and S.P.L Joe doing silver arrow work with the more experienced cubs in the form of some track and trail. Once this was finished a few fun games were played such as dodge ball and catch which were run by Claire and Joe. Gearoid then reminded everyone who had badge work to be returned that they must have it back at next week’s meeting. He also brought up the subject of uniforms again and seeing as how everyone in the section is now with us longer than six weeks we should all have a uniform at this stage. Sean then said the final prayer and everyone was then dismissed.

Parents are asked to ensure that their son is on time for meetings and other activities as organised by the Leaders, as late arrival tends to delay or disrupt the running of the meetings for everyone else, thank you.

New Members

Our books are presently limited to new members joining if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Cubs have a Parent/Guardian call to one of the Cub Scout Pack Meetings and talk to Brian on Monday Night and Gearoid on Thursday Night or talk to any one of the Leaders to have their name put on a waiting list. The Cub age is from 8 years to 10½ /11 years. The Monday Night Cub Pack Meeting starts at seven and finishes at eight fifteen. The Thursday Night Cub Pack Meeting Starts at seven fifteen and finishes at eight forty five.

Scout Troop – News & Information

Saturday Scout Troop Meeting

With Seven O’Clock on the verge of ticking the Scouts were called into Patrol Formation for the start of this week’s Troop Meeting. The Scout Prayer as always being said by all present begins the meeting officially. Once again the first of tonight’s late comers arrived. The Patrols were sent to their corners to discuss what personal gear they might need for a day hike with an overnight stay. As attendance was being done, by Michael and Gearoid the next of our late comers arrived. At this point Brendan reminded those who have arrived late in the last few weeks and the rest of the Scout Troop that the Scout Meeting does actually start at Seven and that it is not very fair on the Scouts, some of whom travel a lot farther than those who are consistently late. He also spoke to some of the Scouts about their attendance and the need for a vast improvement in it. He also spoke to those who are wearing white runners with their Uniform, Black Shoes are what is required and again it is not very fair to your fellow Scouts who make the effort. The topic each Patrol was asked to talk about, being Personal Gear for a Hike and an Overnight, everyone got involved in this part of the meeting with answers from all of the Scouts, some of the answers were given a bit more time for some discussion. Brendan then spoke briefly about safety when using a hand axe and bow saw, this will be covered in more detail in the coming weeks. The Patrols then were given some rope and the basic knots were revised, the reef knot, figure of eight, thumb knot, clove hitch, and bowline. The Patrol Leaders ensured that everyone in their Patrols were able to tie each of these knots, Brendan said that Pioneering Lashings would be covered next. Michael then got everyone to ‘fall-in’, in order of height, and number off in twos. A game of volleyball followed once Michael made sure everyone was familiar with the rules. Then a few games of Volleyball were played. Before the end of the meeting the card game was played with Tony’s Tiger Patrol winning. Patrol Formation was then called for as the final notices were covered and everyone reminded that the next event is the Indoor Cooking Competition on Sunday 30^th November in the Scout Den starting at one and finishing for five, we hope. Up for presentation on that day will be Scout of the Year, Patrol Leader of the Year, The NLB (Nugent, Lanigan, Burke) and the Indoor Cooking Competition. Also we should be putting up this Year’s Peg on the wall for Annual Camp 2008 in Barcelona as voted on by the Scouts. Gearoid congratulated the Scouts who had finished their Cyclist Merit Badge of their Badge. The Troop were told there will be no meeting next week as Abbeyside are on Catering Crew. The saying of the Scout Prayer followed by a few words from Scout Leader Brendan about remembering those who have gone before us finished the meeting.

Leader Michael presented Scouts Tony, Aaron, James and Conor with their well deserved Badges.

New members are always welcome so if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Scouts have an adult call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. The Scout age is from 10½ years to 15/16 years. Scout Meetings are on a Saturday night from seven to nine.
