Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Monday Night Cub Section Meeting

The Monday Night Cubs had a break this past Monday due to the Bank Holiday Weekend. Things are back to normal Monday 3rd November with the meeting starting at Seven and finishing at eight and is Full Uniform.

Thursday Night Cub Section Meeting

This week’s meeting began at the usual time of 7:15. Darragh lead the Cub Section in the Cub Scout Prayer. Subs were collected by Mandy as some of the late arrivals joined us. Brendan organised some relay games with a difference which involved ‘Star Jumps’, and ‘Burps’. Mandy and Claire then got the Cubs doing some painting and drawing. They were doing a mask for next week’s meeting which is fancy dress. Staying quiet while Leaders or other Cubs are talking to the Cub Section was once again dealt with and some Cubs had to spoken to a number of times during the meeting about the way they were misbehaving and disrupting the meeting delaying the running of games and activities during the meeting. Claire, Mandy, Aaron and Joe got everyone back on track drawing and colouring. The Cub Section did a small bit of ‘Drill’ before moving on to the next game of ‘Mummy’, this involved the Cub Section being divided into six teams, five teams of four and one of three. Each team was issued with three toilet rolls for this game, one team member/Cub was to pick by the rest to be the ’Mummy’ and wrapped in toilet roll, then it was up to the Leaders to pick the best ’Mummy’. Clan formation was then called for as the Cubs began to clean up around the Scout Den. Once in Clan formation everyone was given a few sweets by Mandy as a treat, the winners of the ‘Mummy’ game were given some extra sweets as a prize. Everyone was reminded that next week’s meeting is ‘Fancy Dress’ that includes everyone. Also the upcoming Waterford Scout County Cub Hike in Portlaw next Sunday November 2nd was talked about, what to wear and what to bring there will be a full notice for everyone at this coming week’s meeting. Darragh was then called on to lead everyone in the saying of the Cub Scout Prayer. The Cubs were then dismissed.

Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Monday Night Cub Section Meeting

The first meeting of this newly re-formed section took place last Monday night at seven o clock and was a huge success. Almost half of the cubs present on the night are new to Scouting and so a lot of time was devoted to explaining what Cubs are all about. It was pointed out that all Cubs no matter how long they are members they must have a Group Neckerchief and woggle which is to be worn to and at all activities. All Cubs must have Full and Correct Uniform no later than six weeks from the time they have joined the Cub Pack. Scouting Locally, Nationally and Internationally is a Uniformed Organisation and all of its members including the Adult Leaders must and indeed are proud to wear their Uniform, it is after all one of the things that makes Scouting different from other youth organisations! Last week the “Older Cubs” were delighted to show the new Cubs their Uniform and explained to them how they can achieve the Badges on their Uniform by attending the weekly meetings as well as the various activities during the year. Neckerchiefs may be purchased from the Leaders at the regular meetings while the Uniform itself may be purchased from the Scout Shop ‘The Outdoor Adventure Store’ in Cork or Dublin.

Monday Night Cub Section - Hike

Last Saturday morning the first outdoor activity of the section was a hike around Glenshelane woods. This hike began shortly after ten o’ clock and finished shortly after one. The very large turnout was blessed with fine weather and had a great time on the event. The Cubs soon learned the reason they were told to bring extra foot wear and clothing. Some were in need of a change as they had to ford a river and deal with some wet and muddy conditions during the hike. Some of the events during the hike which they all handled without a problem included crossing the river, climbing up steep inclines, walking through mud, finding deer antlers, visiting a haunted castle and hearing of its past, keeping out of the way of a bull. Yes indeed to say a lot was packed into a short time would be an understatement! On arrival at the Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin the last of the packed lunches were eaten before heading off back to the car park where all were to be picked up to be taken home. While on this part of the walk the Cubs learned some marching songs and could be heard singing loudly by all the parents as they approached the car park from quite a distance off. This very successful hike according to the Leaders Sandy, Muller, Joe and Kevin is only the start of things to come, so as the Scout Motto says “Be Prepared”!

Thursday Night Cub Section Meeting

Our meeting this week began with Eoghan saying the Cub Scout prayer after which all the Cubs were lined up at the end of the den so as Gearoid could tell everyone the new Clans for the rest of the year, now that we have two Cub Sections, Monday Night and ourselves on Thursday Night. This meant a few promotions within the Cub Pack so congratulations to Jordan Cliffe, Aidan Rousseau and Evan Hickey as well as the other lads who retained their positions. Gearoid gave the Cub Section a quick talk to dispel some rumours he had heard about what the other Cub Section were doing over the coming weekend and told everyone that the activities that both sections would be doing would balance each other out over the coming year. A few relay games were then played to see how the new Clan’s were getting on together and it must be said that they seem to be pretty well balanced. We were also paid a visit at this stage by our old BUDDY Brendan who had a few questions and words of advice for us. A close game of number soccer was played with everyone being well and truly tired afterwards. We then had Aidan and Conor doing their Book Reports as part of their Book Reader Merit Badge. Both boys gave an excellent account of the books they had read and answered questions from the rest of the Cub Section very well. Another relay game was then played before Gearoid gave out a notice about the Waterford Scout County Cub Hike in Portlaw Woods on November 2nd and also about the next two weekly meetings. On Sunday November 2nd 2008 the Thursday Night Cub Section will be taking part in the first of the Waterford Scout County Cub Activities, this being the Cub Hike in Portlaw Woods. Starting in Portlaw at 11am and finishing at 3pm. For the day each Cub will need to wear old clothes that you do not mind getting dirty or wet, hike boots or wellingtons or old runners for the hike, rain gear, hat/cap, warm fleece or top, packed lunch, warm drink, water to drink, a change of clothes and runners for when the hike is over. And as always, your Abbeyside Group Neckerchief must be worn. Those attending this event will need to organise their own transport. For the next two Thursday Night Meetings, 23rd and 30th will be both ‘Mufti’ Meetings. All Cubs are asked to wear clothes they do not mind getting extremely dirty or that they may even get some paint on. He also presented Sixer and Seconder Badges to Jordan, Aidan and Evan. Eoghan then said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.

Scout Troop – News & Information

Saturday Scout Troop Meeting

This week our weekly meeting was taking a very different format, firstly it was from four to ten, secondly it was in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin, and the biggest difference was that it would be a joint activity with Ferrybank Scout Troop who were staying in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin for the weekend. We arrived for four o’clock and set up the tables and checked the gas cookers to be used for cooking dinners. Roll call was quickly done and the Patrols checked to be sure they had enough food for those whom had attended. The Scout Troop then split into two groups and joined the Ferrybank Scout Troop for the building of some bridges on the site using their pioneering skills, ‘square’ and ‘sheer’ lashings were employed to make a ‘monkey bridge’ while a ‘friction bridge’ was put together also. With the light starting to fade the Abbeyside Scouts started cooking their meals and fires were light by the Ferrybank Scouts, these were used to cook rice and potatoes while the meat was cooked on the cooker in the Cabin. Some free time was enjoyed before the job of gathering timber for the Campfire was started. SPL Joe and Pl’s Kevin and Aaron got down to the business of lighting the fire with the help of Brian from Ferrybank. With the fire lighting everyone gathered to sing a few songs. Before the Campfire finished a presentation was made to Group Leader of Ferrybank Mick McGrath of a Badge for his Campfire Blanket. A few more songs and yells were blasted out before the Scouts from Abbeyside headed home. It was a day to remember. The Scouts from Abbeyside were told there would be no meeting next week due to the Bank Holiday and the next meeting was in two weeks time in the Scout Den Abbeyside and Yes it is Full Uniform. A special thanks to Ferrybank Scout Troop and their Leaders, Martina Scout Troop Leader, Mick Group Leader, Brian and Decky for their hospitality on the day. Also to all our Scouts Parents who provided transport. And our own Leaders Brendan, Claire and Gearoid for their time.

New members are always welcome so if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Scouts have an adult call along with you to the meeting and talk to one of the Leaders. Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Monday Night Cub Pack

The Monday Night Cub Pack opened for business on this week. Monday night meetings will initially be from 7p.m. to 8p.m. As of now the Leaders in charge will be Brian Mulvihill, Sandra Griffin and Patrick Fennell. It is hoped that a couple of other interested people will become part of the leader team also in the coming weeks. Best of luck to all those who have made the change to Thursday night and I know you all will miss Gearoid. Exciting times ahead as the numbers continue to increase in the Cub Packs.

Thursday Night Cub Pack Meeting

Ryan began our meeting this week with the saying of the Cub Scout Prayer followed by subs being taken up by Section Leader Gearoid. The list of names were then read out so as everyone was clear as to what night they were to turn up on next week as there was a few changes from the previous week's list because the newer night of Monday did not seem to suit everyone. Gearoid then informed the Cub Pack that there may be some promotions in the future for some of the Cubs. Group Leader and Monday Night Cub Section Leader for the new Monday Night Cub Pack Brian Mulvihill then made a visit so as he could have a little chat with the New Monday Night Cubs whom he would be in charge of and so he could put a few names to some faces. A few relay games were then played such as the basic Clan relay race, a race with a ball between the Cubs knees, and a new game called load the asteroid which proved a little difficult to some of the Cubs but I'm sure they'll get used to it in time. The Cubs favourite game of Dodge Ball was also played as it was the last time they would all be playing it together at a weekly meeting, hence the reason that Leaders Claire and Sandy seemed to get hit more than the Cubs did. Gearoid then announced that because it was our last meeting together we were going to have a little party which went down a treat so we were all soon eating crisps and chocolate bars and drinking coke and fanta. Sorry parents if your sons went home a little more active than usual. After everything was cleaned up Sandy told the Cubs that would be attending the Monday Night Cub Pack Meeting that it would be a Full Uniform Meeting and Gearoid said that the Thursday Night Cub Pack Meeting would also be the same. Ryan said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.

Scout Troop – News & Information

Saturday Night Scout Troop Meeting

Our meeting this week began at seven with the saying of the Scout Prayer. We returned to last week’s topic of a weekend Menu and the budget required for such a menu. As practice the Scouts would be cooking a dinner during next week’s meeting in Glenshelane with the Scouts from Ferrybank. Scouts should contact their Patrol Leader about this Menu, and the Patrol Leaders will be organising the food as well as the cooking equipment their Patrols will need.

It was time for some fun and Ciaran took over to run a few rounds of ‘Number Soccer’. For this game the Troop was divided into two teams and each member of the team was then given a number. When their number is called they must try and score a goal in the other team’s goal. As the game went on the teams had scores deducted for outside interference during play, as is the rule during a lot of games played at the meetings. If it is not your turn in the game then do not interfere with another Scouts turn or go. Gearoid then had another challenging team game for everyone to play, here he kept the same two teams, a plate, some dried peas and each Scout being given a straw. The game is called load the asteroid which proved a little difficult to some. Each Scout in turn had to collect a pea from one end of the den and transfer it to the other end, now the hard part using the straw!

The Troop then broke into three groups, Gearoid and Aaron took charge of the New Scouts covering parts of the ‘Tracker Badge’, Michael and Ciaran went over part of the ‘Explorer Badge’ with the next group of Scouts, Joe and Brendan spoke to the Patrol Leaders, Assistant Patrol Leaders and older Scouts about the ‘Leadership Award’ and about what is required to achieve this Award.

Everyone then gathered back in the hall and spoke of upcoming events, such as the Hike on Sunday in Glenshelane, next week’s Troop Meeting in Glenshelane with Ferrybank Scout Troop, and the Troop Overnight in Mount Melleray Scout Centre. Those Scouts over the age of thirteen who may be interested in going to the South East Provincial Youth Forum are reminded they need to have a deposit into Brendan soon of €15.00 the total cost of this weekend is €40.00. The saying of the Scout Prayer ended the meeting with everybody being reminded to wear their Group Neckerchief for all non uniform activities. Everyone was dismissed and headed for home.

A Court Of Honour was held after the meeting where how their new Patrols were getting on together, in future if the Patrol Leaders had issues with members of their Patrols behaviour they were to send them straight to Brendan and he would speak with the Scout. Next week’s meeting is in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin and starts at four and finishes at ten. This is a joint activity between Ferrybank Scout Troop and Abbeyside Scout Troop.

Glenshelane Cycle Hike and Troop Day

Scout’s gathered at the den on Sunday Morning at 09:15 am for the finishing off of the ‘Cyclist Merit Badge’, they were heading to Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin. The Scouts on the cycle were PL’s Tony O’Mahony, and Aaron Fraher, APL Conor Lawless, Scouts James Harty, Dylan Lawless, Conor Harty, Leaders Michael Organ and Gearoid Fraher, with SPL Joe Conway and Scout Leader Brendan Kiersey as the ‘Support Crew’. Once on the road in their ‘Hi Vis’ vests and cycle helmets in place the journey up was uneventful. Meanwhile in Glenshelane more of the Scouts were arriving for half past ten, while they waited for the cyclist to arrive they took a walk up to Lyre Bridge to see the recent changes made by the Fisheries Board to the weirs on the rivers. The scouts forded the river and a picture in the Scout Den came to mind as Leader Ciaran helped some of the Scouts who had not brought the right footwear with them, called ‘he ant heavy he’s my brother’. Just as the hikers sauntered back into the Campsite the Cyclists had arrived as well. A well deserved break was given to the Cyclists with Gearoid looking for his cuppa, and the kettle had to be boiled. A flag up with the saying of the Scout Prayer opened our day in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin. The other Scouts present went about collecting some wood to do a bit of backwoods cooking. When everyone was fully recovered the fires were set alight, this took a bit longer as the wood was on the damp side, but as always the cooked food was worth the wait. A tidy-up was carried out giving us some time to do knots. Group Leader Brian was on hand to oversee a relay game involving the knots. This was fun and warmed everyone up for heading home. The Scout Prayer was said and the Group Flag was taken down before another enjoyable day ended in Glenshelane. The cyclist headed for home after Gearoid got his bike back, silly place really to leave your bike buddy!! The cycle home brought some mechanical problems, if only someone knew about bikes, luckily Gearoid was able to assist, and everyone kept moving. Well done lads. Thanks to the Leaders for giving up their Sunday.

Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Monday Night Cub Pack

In the next number of weeks this section will open for business on Monday nights initially from 7p.m. to 8p.m. As of now the Leaders in charge will be Brian Mulvihill, Sandra Griffin and Patrick Fennell. It is hoped that a couple of other interested people will become part of the leader team also in the coming weeks. The leaders are currently sorting out the details of the move and will let those concerned with the switch know the details in the next week or two. For those unaware of who the “new leaders” are, the amount of years of scouting experience they bring to the Monday night cub section can only be described as follows. They (well some of them) remember when the cub uniform was one of short trousers! For now all cubs should continue to attend as normal on Thursday nights until told otherwise!

Thursday Night Cub Pack Meeting

This week’s meeting began with Luke Lavelle saying the Cub Scout Prayer followed by subs being taken up by Assistant Cub Leader Mandy. The Cubs were then split up into different Badge Work Groups. Assistant Cub Leader Sandy covered part of the Silver Arrow Badge Work doing Communications with one of the Groups. Mandy did more of the Tenderfoot Badge with the newer Cubs where they covered the World Scout Badge and revising the Cub Scout Law, Promise and Prayer. Section Leader Gearóid did some of the Bronze Arrow with the third group covering the Reef Knot, Thumb Knot and Figure of Eight Knot. A few games were then played such as Dodge Ball, Relay Race and a new game called Heads and Tails which was introduced by Assistant Cub Leader Mandy. A notice was then given out to those Cubs who would be changing from the Thursday night meeting to the new Monday night meeting in order to balance up the numbers. This will include some of the more experienced Cubs and a few of the newer Cubs who have joined since our return in September. Anyone who was asked to move from the Thursday night meeting to the Monday night meeting and who may find it difficult to do so is asked to contact Gearóid by the end of this week’s meeting. Everyone was then told that next week’s meeting would be a mufti meeting. Luke the said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.

Scout Troop – News & Information

Log Form Waterford Scout County Mountain Pursuit Challenge

26th-28th September 2008

Patrol: Clare Guilfoyle (Leader), Kevin Brazel, Aaron Fraher, Joe Conway, and Tony O'Mahony.

Friday:- On Friday we met at the den for 5.15 and packed our gear including the Troop's Trangia, Tents and Bivvy Bags, which we had checked on Thursday Night, into our rucksacks and Claire gave us our food for the weekend including Cornflakes, Milk and Curry. We left the den at 5.25 in Claire and Noelle's cars for the drive to the Nire Valley Car Park.

After some time spent figuring out where the Car Park was, we arrived there at about 6.10 to find we were the first Troop to arrive and met Pascal Guilfoyle. After unpacking our gear from the cars and, after Pascal informing us the forecast was for no rain, we left some of our wet gear in the car which was a choice we were going to regret later! We then chose the route we were going to take to The Gap which was to be our first nights camp. The route we chose had a steep climb at the start and then leveled out and helpfully there was a trail of white stakes for us to follow. After an easy 1 hour hike we arrived at The Gap first and chose our Campsite. We pitched our tent and made the supper we had brought (Pot Noodle!). We then went to look around to the other troops in particular the De la Salle Ventures. We went to bed at 10.30 because we knew we were in for a long hike on Saturday.

Saturday:- We woke at 9 fairly tired on Saturday because it had been very windy during the night and due to us running short on pegs(!), so much for checking our gear, we had a loud night with the tent shaking around us! We had our breakfast of cornflakes and tea and then packed away the tents, divided up the gear and set off at 5 to 10 for the long day of hiking that lay ahead. We started the hike last but were soon passing people as we made very good progress up the slopes for the first hour and we stopped for a break at the end of the first real slope and admired the brilliant view. After about 1 and a half hours hiking we caught up with Pascal and other leaders and spent the rest of the day with or close to them. We then met some very boggy and wet ground so we slowed down for a while, which we picked our way slowly through and stopped for lunch on top of a cliff where there were breath taking views and we saw turf drying out. At 3.15 we arrived at Coum Fay. This was our Camp for the night. After 5 hours of hard hiking we were feeling tired but delighted that we had finished. Then we pitched the tent and cooked a long awaited dinner of chicken curry, thanks Claire. We had a surprise during dinner as the De la Salle Ventures arrived to tell everyone that they had went to a different lake and had been there for two hours by the time they realized they were in the wrong place! As darkness fell in our stunning surroundings some scouts chose to play a game of “capture the bag” while others went to get turf for a fire which was to prove nearly impossible to light as it was still damp! Well it was worth a try! Again we went to bed fairly early as the days hiking really tired us out after using the trangia to boil water and make tea.

Sunday:- We woke on Sunday to the sound of rain on the tent but that didn't stop Joe Conway of Abbeyside and Mark O'Keefe of De la Salle going for a swim in the lake which by their accounts was “Freezing!!”. We had breakfast again of cornflakes and tea took down the tent and started the hike back to the car park at 10 o'clock. It was a cold and wet hike with some ditches to climb over and rivers to cross which made walking with a full rucksack very tiring. When we arrived at the car par at 11 o'clock which was over an hour ahead of when we due to be collected at 12 30 so we fired up the Trangia one last time and made tea and soup. We were picked up at 12 30 and went to the den to return the Troops Gear, the tents had to be spread out to dry, compasses returned, Bivvy Bags aired, Trangia returned to storage and returned home at 1 30.

Saturday Night Scout Troop Meeting

This week everyone was present for the meeting to start on time at seven. The meeting was Full Uniform and began with the saying of the Scout Prayer. The Patrols then went to their Patrol Corners where they were to work on a menu for a weekend away, this took a little longer than expected, a shopping list was talked about and how much it would cost per person for the weekends food. Each of the Scouts was told they should help whom ever does the household shopping to see what each item cost. They were also to get the prices of the goods on their Patrol shopping list and everyone would talk again next week. A balanced menu was also mentioned and will be talked of in more detail. The first game of the night was the ever popular Dodge Ball, followed by Squares. Gearoid then spoke about the Troop Hike to Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin near Cappoquin next Sunday 12th October, 2008. It is planned that the older Scouts will cycle to Glenshelane to finish off their Cyclist Merit Badge. The younger Scouts are to be brought up and collected again later. Those cycling are to meet at the Scout Den at nine o’clock with all their gear for the day in a back pack that they can carry on their back as they cycle. Those being driven up should be in Glenshelane for ten thirty and collected again by three. Everyone will need to bring, rain gear, packed lunch, snack, warm drink, cap/hat, warm fleece/jumper, and most important you’re your Group Neckerchief. Those cycling must have a helmet and will be given a Hi Vis vest to wear. Claire spoke about Route Cards and how they work. The meeting was visited by Group Chairman Jim Shine and Group Leader Brian Mulvihill. Brendan then spoke of other upcoming planned Activities, like Troop Meeting in Glenshelane on Saturday 18th October, 2008 this is a joint Activity with Ferrybank Scout Troop who will be staying the weekend in Glenshelane, a planned overnight in Mount Melleray Scout Centre on Friday Night 24th October, 2008. Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Monday Night Cub Pack

Its been quite a while since the heading above was last seen in the weekly scout notes but you can be assured its one that will be seen again plenty of times in the future! The reason is that it has been decided by the group council and the group leaders that the time is now right to revive this section of the group. As you may be aware, due to the success and hard work of the Thursday night leaders/section numbers have grown too big to handle on one night. In the past number of weeks quite a number of parents have been in contact with cub leader Gearoid about their son/s joining the cubs. These parents were told that due to high numbers their sons were on a waiting list. All those on this waiting list will now join the Monday night section. Also some of those presently in the Thursday night section will have to switch over to the Monday night section in order to even out the number of boys in each section. The leaders are currently sorting out the details of this move and will let those concerned with the switch know the details in the next week or two.

Jordan Cliffe began our meeting this week with the saying of the Cub Scout prayer followed by subs being taken up by Assistant Cub Leader Mandy. Gearoid then introduced the new Leaders to those in the Cub Scout Pack who were absent on the previous week. Leaders Claire, Sandy, Patrick and SPL Joe then took the more experienced Cubs and did some compass work with them, such as explaining what a compass was used for and how to take a bearing. Meanwhile Gearoid and Mandy took the newer Cubs and started them on their Tenderfoot Badge covering such things as the Cub Scout Motto, Law and Promise. It was then time for some of the fun stuff as far as the Cubs were concerned, yes, relay games including a new one where the last Cub in the Clan has to crawl his way under ever other Clan member to the front and stand up. The relay continues and the first Clan to finish standing at alert are the winners. A few hectic games were played before everyone had finally run out of energy. Gearoid then informed everyone about the second Cub Night that would be coming into effect in a few weeks time due to the increasing numbers of Cubs joining and looking to join the Cub Scout Pack. He then explained that some of those Cubs currently attending the Thursday night meeting would be moving to the new night to give a balance to the new night. He then introduced everyone to the Leadership Team who would be in charge of the new Monday Night Cub Scout Pack, Group Leader and Cub Scout, Section Leader Brian Mulvihill, Assistant Cub Leader, Sandy Griffin and Assistant Cub Leader, Patrick Fennell. Everyone was then told that next week’s meeting would be a mufti meeting. Jordan then said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.Contact

If there are any questions about the Activities or the Abbeyside Cub Scout Pack in general then you can contact Gearoid Fraher, Cub Scout Pack, Section Leader on 087-2034172 or any of the other Abbeyside Leaders. If you have any questions you can E-Mail the Cub Scout Pack on cubpack@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Gearoid will get back in contact with you as soon as he can.

Cub Pack Meeting

The Cub Pack Meeting Night is presently on a Thursday night from seven fifteen to nine o’clock. A second night will be opening on Monday Nights details to follow.

Scout Troop – News & Information

Saturday Night Scout Troop Meeting

We started our meeting this week at seven o’clock with the saying of the Scout Prayer, well when I say we, most of the Troop managed to arrive for seven but some still cannot seem able to make it at this time, the meeting starts at seven everybody not after this, we hope that this situation will be put right by those concerned. The patrol got down to work straight away organising equipment and cooking gear, as tonight’s meeting was going to be spent cooking. Each Scout was to bring down food they would be cooking for themselves or as part of their Patrol. Attendance was done by Brendan and Gearoid as Michael insured that everyone had the gear they needed for tonight. As the Scouts started to fry the foods they had the den was a haze of fumes, setting off the smoke alarm on the stage. Tonight’s exercise of cooking was just to show everyone there is no big mystery about cooking, that everyone can do it. And with cooking comes the clean up and this also is not big mystery it just needs the effort of behalf of everyone in the Patrol. With the gear stored away, Patrol Formation was called for. Brendan then talked about the nights cooking and what needs to be improved. He spoke of future cooking that would be done including the Annual Indoor Cooking Competition, the Scouts were asked to think about ideas they may have for the menu etc and any ideas should be passed on to their Patrol Leaders, who were in the Nire Valley this weekend on the Waterford Scout County MPC with SPL Joe and Leader Claire, we should have a report for next week’s notes. Next week’s meeting starts at seven sharp and is Full Correct Uniform, so Ironed Neckerchief, neat Uniform and no white runners or socks gentlemen. Saying of the Scout Prayer finished the meeting with the Scout Troop being dismished.

Kwahadi Dancers To Visit Waterford

As part of their 2009 European Show Tour of the Kwahadi Dancers, Venturing Crew 9, BSA are all set to visit County Waterford. On Wednesday, July 22nd to Thursday, July 23rd the 4th Waterford Unit Abbeyside Scout Group will host the Kwahadi Dancers, Venturing Crew 9, BSA. The Kwahadi Dancers are a unique youth performing group from the “Crown of Texas”, the Panhandle area of the Texas High Plains. the Kwahadis present their colorful pageant of song, dance, and stories of the American Indian. The Kwahadis are the most tenured performing group in Texas! Officially Venture Crew Nine of the Golden Spread Council, BSA, over 1600 young men and ladies have presented over 3800 performances since 1944 in 46 states and overseas! They were honoured by being given the name “Kwahadi” by the Elders of the Comanche Nation. To find out more about the Kwahadi Dancers look them up on www.kwahadi.com.

Future Of Cub Scout Pack

We here in the 4th Waterford Unit, Abbeyside Group of Scouting Ireland have continuously, since 1930 provided scouting to the young people of Abbeyside and beyond! In those seventy plus years, hundreds of young people have joined the Group and by following the Scout programme have enjoyed and taken part in all sorts of adventures locally, nationally and abroad! We currently offer the Scout programme to young people through both the Cub and Scout sections, which cover an age range from eight to sixteen plus years of age. At this time and because of the commitment and hard work of the Leaders within the Cub Section which holds its meetings on Thursday nights the Cub Section has grown in numbers at a phenomenal rate! Indeed the section has grown so large that it is no longer able to function as it should and as such it has been decided by the Group Council, that a “second Cub Section” will come into operation within the coming weeks. The Leaders are currently drawing up plans for this second Section which will meet on a week night not yet decided. A waiting list is in operation currently for the present Cub Section and it is envisaged that these young people will become members of the “new” Section along with some Cubs from the current Section! The leaders are hoping to have perhaps 25-30 members in each of the Cub sections. We have in the past and for a long number of years had two successful Cub sections. It is a sign of the success of the Cub programme that we are heading in this direction. In the coming weeks you will receive more information about the plans for the second Section and the short term impact it may or may not have on your son/s attending Cubs on Thursday Nights.

Yours in Scouting, Brian Mulvihill Group Leader, Jim Shine Chairman

Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Thursday Night Cub Pack Meeting

Our meeting this week started with the saying of the Cub Scout Prayer by Evan followed by subs being taken up by Section Leader Gearoid. Annual registration monies and both registration forms were also taken up. Any Cub that has yet to hand back his forms is asked to do so by this week’s meeting please. Gearoid then informed those present that there would be some big changes in the Cub Pack for the coming year, one of them being in the form of the Leaders that the Cubs would see this term. He told the Cubs that Michael Organ will no longer available due to university commitments and Brendan wouldn't be around as often as last year which got a mixed reaction! Gearoid then introduced his two Assistant Leaders for this year, Mandy Roberts and Claire Guilfoyle who between them have many years of experience and knowledge and will be a great asset to the Cub Pack. Some of the new Cubs then introduced themselves to the Cub Pack before the Clan Leaders and Assistant Clan Leaders did likewise so as we could all get to know each other. A few relay games were then played to get the adrenalin going such as clan relay and a new relay game where the cubs had to hop with a small ball between their knees and the first clan to finish as always was the winner. A few games of this was played to get everyone used to it and so they can show those missing how to play it in future. Then a Cub Pack favourite was played, yes, Dodge Ball, this game is always great fun.

Our Group Leader Brian Mulvihill then made a visit to hand out a notice to the Cubs to bring home and explain to the Cubs that due to the rising numbers in the Cub Pack it was decided that a second Cub night would be starting in a few weeks. This would be made up of some of the Cubs from the Thursday night meeting, some of the new Cubs and people who we have on a waiting list to join at the moment. The second night has yet to be decided but we do know that our Group Leader Brian, is putting together a team of Leaders for this night. Evan then said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.

Scout Troop – News & Information

Saturday Night Scout Troop Meeting

This week’s meeting was Full Uniform and began at the normal time of seven. The saying of the Scout Prayer followed ‘Fall In’. the topic for revision tonight was Knots, so as attendance was done by Gearoid each patrol showed the new Scouts the basic Knots. This was carried on in the next section of the meeting as the three Patrols did different activities, Eammon and Claire covered Knots helping those unsure of any of the knots. Michael and Joe covered Kim’s Games, Observation, for this 50 items were placed on the table and each Patrol was given two minutes to memorise the items and five minutes afterwards to write them down. Gearoid and Brendan did Uniform Inspection, some basic drill movements, Scout Sign and Scout Salute. Michael and Joe gave the results of the observation game, Chris Janes APL did the best at 20/50. We will see if we can get the scores a lot higher as the year goes on. The items were also shown to the Troop so they see what they missed out on. With the knots there is always room for improvement and again these will be brushed up on as we progress through the year before we move on to the next stage of pioneering. Uniform is always an area where small things let people down, missing badges, missing uniform parts, white socks, unpolished shoes and untidy uniform. Everyone was shown where they can make changes for the better. Drill will come with practice, and this will be done as part of the meeting over the coming weeks and months, building on what is learned previously.

Gearoid then ran a few relay games, as Claire covered the Waterford Scout County Mountain Pursuit Challenge in the Nire over the coming weekend. A game of crab soccer was organised by Gearoid before the end of the meeting. Everyone was told that next weeks meeting is non Uniform to give everyone a chance to get their badges onto their Uniforms. Next week we will be doing some cooking, so the Scouts need to bring some food Saying of the Scout Prayer finished off the meeting for this week. A court of honour with Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders followed the meeting. Patrol activity for the coming two months were talked about, with the Tiger Patrol still to put some ideas together. The Kestrel Patrol talk about a hike to the light house in Ballinacourty, while the Eagle Patrol are to go to Ballyvoile.

Scouts: Prepared to build and sustain peace

The United Nations' International Day of Peace - marked every year on September 21 - is a day when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace. Scouts worldwide are encouraged to participate in marking this special day in every corner of the globe.

Every Peace Day event provides an opportunity to inspire individuals and empower communities to celebrate victories for peace that have been won throughout the year, and to rededicate our commitment to work for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world all year long.

In 160 countries around the world, Scouts build and sustain peace on a daily basis in what is one of Scouting's core values. “Peace Day” is a day to reflect upon the Scout Promise and Law, to share what is being done globally in the field of peace education and motivate others to have the courage to make a difference - a day to share inspirational projects, lead activities and participate in special events.

Annual Camp 2008

Part Four

Thursday our second last day!! Today was not as sunny to begin with though it still was warm, clouds could be seen in the sky and there was even a chance we may have rain. The usual morning routine was gone through before heading to the café to get our bus which we were sharing with another JEKA group, not scouts, from Belgium to ‘Water World Lloret’ an aqua theme park near Girona. This park was a lot bigger than ‘Isla De Fantasia’ which we visited on our first day in Spain. Again there were slides, loops, tubes, inflatable’s and pools of all sorts to choose from. There was also ‘Crazy Golf’ if you were brave enough or for the really brave there was the ‘Bungee Jump’ here Marco and Cathal flew the flag for the 4th, rather them than me. The different attractions included ones for young and old like X-Treme Mountain an incredible Big Dipper, over 260 m long and full of frightening ups and downs. The course –more than 2 minutes- takes you in a boat for 2 persons to a sensational aquatic descent. Water Mountain The Big Dipper of Europe. It is like the classical Big Dipper, but in an aquatic version. 250 m up and down with turns and curves in the dark. Enjoy yourself in the company of a friend, as the boats are for two persons. You will feel the refreshing sensation together. Rafting River, the biggest aquatic attraction in Europe for everybody to enjoy. This is the new sensation…! You let the river take you in a round boat for four persons. 155 m of the 215 m of the attraction are in the dark. And without expecting it, you will suddenly turn 360º and you´ll get wet under the waterfalls. Piscina d'Onades the biggest pool, 50 m long and the most… unexpected… You can stay on the soft beach or play in the waves that can reach 2 m. Jacuzzis, the paradise. Pools full of relaxing bubbles and hot water will make you want to stay a bit longer before going back to the sensations of the other attractions. Water Gegant, the endless slide, it will take you through the water current, and in the middle of curves and more curves, you will go down. Don´t think it will never end. Storm a new concept in aquatic attractions, unique in Europe; two big tunnels with a diameter of more than 4 m are waiting for the visitor after his descent of 80 m through a big tube, where he literally feels sucked into the pool by a tremendous water force. Kamikaces, only for the brave, not every one dares to jump down from the steep height of 77 m. In both of them you can reach the speed of 60km/hour, giving you a unique sensation of vertigo. Water Pistes, the soft slides, 4 persons jump at the same time on the straight parallel slides, who will be the first to arrive? Made of a sponge-like material, you will enjoy the descent, fun for everyone. Riu Salvatge the natural level difference makes you feel you are in one of the fastest canyons of the mountains. Water Petit, the slide for little children, this slide was constructed so that also those who don´t like the bigger emotions can enjoy their day in the park. Family Lagoon A lake for the relax of the entire family where the quietness of a small beach. Llac Relax, relax a bit in a quiet zone of the park. Piscines La Calma, a paradise for relaxing and resting. The entire family will enjoy it. Water Ràpid, the most dynamic slide. A sinous course makes you go down in a sensational way through this exciting attraction. Kiddie Island, This new area is for the little ones, a paradise for children. LLac Infantil, a small lake with children´s toys, so that they too will want to return again. Here they learn to enjoy the water. Or soak up some rays while lying out on a sun lounger. The Scouts, Ventures and Leaders enjoy this relaxing day by the pools while getting the occasional adrenal rush from one of the slides, loops, tubes and pools. Everyone had an enjoyable day, a few items were bought at the shop before getting our bus back to Santa Margarida. Back at Cien Biel dinner was rustled up and devoured. We had a final visit from the English Rover Scouts who were also travelling home the following day, Friday, they were to travel home by bus taking nearly 33 hours.

Friday and a relaxing day to begin with before the big clean up was to start. Some Scouts went to the pool for a swim, along with a few Ventures and Leaders while lunch of Spaghetti Bolognese was put together in the very hot kitchen, during Annual Camp the kitchen was always a place of extreme heat when food was being cooked, this was due to its small size and lack of ventilation. When cooking those cooking would often go outside to the heat of the day to cool down!! We were scheduled to leave Santa Margarida at six in the evening and would be home by three in the morning. The last few hours were spent sorting personnel gear and moving them out of the rooms. The rooms and showers were cleaned and swept out ready for the JEKA representative to inspect. We gathered up for the final flag down of Annual Camp 2008, where Section Leaders Gearoid and Sandy did the honours. We then walked down the track for the final time to meet the Bus at the Café, only this time it was for home and Barcelona Airport. We had some time for everyone to get food before heading to the gate to catch our flight, we had a slight delay as there was a problem with some of our baggage, but that was quickly sorted and our flight was on its way. We had missed our time slot, so had to wait until on became available. On arrival in Dublin we had to wait for a rival airline to move from our docking station. Our driver Michael was waiting for us when we came out of the airport, and shortly after as we travelled along the M50 the rain started and continued to fall as we travelled back to the village, on arrival back in Abbeyside we were greeted by the parents and family and of course the rain. The end of another Annual Camp, thoughts of where our next year’s Annual Camp might be? That is for another day and when we have fully recovered from this one completely.

Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Thursday Night Cub Pack Meeting

Our first meeting back after the summer started with Cian saying the Cub Scout Prayer. Gearóid went out the back to talk to Parents of the New Cubs (to explain the role their son would play as members of the Cub Scout Pack), so Brendan, Aaron, Joe and Claire ran the meeting. The Link Badge Cubs were down for their last Cub Scout Meeting before entering the Scout section. A couple of rounds of the relay race followed to see which team would be victorious. As it turned out Seamies team were victorious, because they seeemed to be the only team that could stay at alert. We played several rounds of the game of 4 boxes, which were extremely hectic (as usual), but which everyone enjoyed. After which we went back and did some more team relays, in which we divided the 13 new Cubs into the already made out teams. Brendan collected subs and Gearóid collected registration from all the Cubs that had it. We then sat down and Brendan proceeded to show the new Cubs the layout of the Uniform, and the badges they will be working towards during the year. Gearóid then informed everyone that next weeks meeting will be full uniform. Cian then said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.

There were also changes among the Patrols with three Patrols so there was a need to make some new Patrol Leaders they are Tony O’Mahony and Kevin Brazel, new Patrol Leaders means new Assistant Patrol Leaders, this honour went to Chris Janes, Conor Lawless and Declan Leonard. Everyone with Full Scout Uniform were given their new Patrol Badges, those being Eagle Patrol, Kestrel Patrol, and Tiger Patrol. Joe Conway has also been promoted to Senior Patrol Leaders.
