Round Ireland Expedition
On Sunday Morning last a Large crowd had gathered on the slip at the Look out Dungarvan to wish far well to three Kayakers, Tony O’Mahony, Brian Fahy and Derek Lyons, all being past members of the 4th. They intend to travel around the coast of Ireland by Kayak carrying all the equipment with them as they go. Covering an average of 35 miles every day it is estimated to take around 35 days. We would like to wish them all the best and a very safe journey.
Giant Sleep Over In Aid Of The National Children’s Hospital Tallaght
We have decided to get involved in Scouting Irelands Giant Sleep Over In Aid Of The National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght. We are holding our Sleep Over in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin on Saturday 16th. The Camping fee of €3-00 will be donated to the fund. Any Scouts and Guides interested should have their Leader contact Brendan. We will be Camping out. So far the Cub Scouts, Scouts and Venture Scouts from Abbeyside and Guides from Dungarvan are taking part. Each Section must have a Leader.
Cub Pack Overnight
There was a later than usual start to the Cub Pack meeting, that being eight o’clock. As the Cubs and parents arrived with the usual overnight gear sleeping bag, pillow and of course bedding. This is where there was a bit of a difference some of the Cubs were sleeping on the floor, some on Camping Mats, some on Air Beds, but Conor took the Troop Song ‘The Old 4th Waterford’ literally and brought down a Fold Out Bed.
The Cub Scout Prayer this week was said by Killian with the help from the Leaders and was joined by the Cub Scout Pack.
‘Roll-Call’ was then done and Gearoid got down to the presenting of Challenge Badges that had been completed over the past few months. These were Artist and Athlete Challenge Badges, they are worn on the Right Arm Sleeve just above the elbow of the Cub Scout Jumper.
Gearoid then organised a number of games including the ‘Card Game’ and a game of Soccer, which all the Cubs enjoyed.
When the games were finished a Campfire was done singing a few songs, Bear Hunt, No Banana’s In The Sky, Molly Malone, I Said A Boom and to finish off the Old 4th Waterford.
The Cubs then settled down in their sleeping bags as a DVD was put on while Gearoid and Brendan cooked sausages and chips in the kitchen. Joe and Tom PL’s kept the Cubs under a watchful eye. The Cubs watched some more of the DVD while they ate. Soon it was lights out and time to get some sleep.
Everyone was up before eight on Sunday morning. First it was a quick tidy up of the sleeping gear and getting into their Uniform. The Cubs then sat down to breakfast of cereal and orange juice. It was then time to go to Mass in Abbeyside Church. On the way the Cub Pack say Kayakers and Past Abbeyside Scouts, Tony O’Mahony, Brian Fahy, and Derek Lyons as they started their round Ireland Expedition.
Following Mass and back at the Scout Den it was home for everyone. Thanks to Joe and Tom for their help.
Next weeks Meeting starts at the earlier time of six and runs until half seven. This is a mufti meeting, which means ordinary clothes and you Neckerchief.
Scout Troop Meeting
This week the meeting started at seven and was mufti. After the Scout Prayer was said by all the Patrols went to their Patrol Corners to discuss, a mock election, and a cooking competition in Glenshelane on 16th June 2007. Roll Call was the called. After which the mock election was carried out. We used two methods first past the post/ one vote and proportional representation. But due to the small electoral we did not show the real difference.
Ventures Marco and Patrick were down at the Scout Meeting to show the Scouts the different parts of a Ridge Tent also know as an Icelandic Tent. They showed the Scouts how to tie the Guys up for storage and how to fold a Ridge Tent properly. They discussed issues of care for a Ridge Tent both when storing and using them.
The Scouts then moved outdoors and Leader David put them through their paces with some fast moving team games. Kieran the explained about the new sheets put up on their Patrol Boxes. This will show how far along the Progress Scheme each Scout is. This will work with the sheets in the record book. Brendan then talk to them about what they had decided for their menu for the Cooking in Glenshelane on 16th June.
Back in the Hall before the Scout Prayer was said Joe was presented with his Leadership Award. He was also presented with his Sailing Merit Badge.
The Meeting ended with the saying of the Scout Prayer.
Venture Group Meeting
There was no Venture Group Meeting.
