Cub Scout Pack - News & Information
Thursday Night Cub Scout Pack Meeting
Eoghan Burke began our meeting this week with the saying of the Cub Scout prayer followed by subs being taken up by section leader Gearoid. We then went out into the field for a game of soccer, which everyone seemed to enjoy but the end score line seemed to stir a bit of controversy between the referees and the two teams. As usual though the referee's decision was and always will be final.
It was then back into the den where Brendan did the second part of the first aid which he started the previous week and is part of the bronze arrow badge. Here he showed the cubs the different ways to use their Neckerchief to treat different injuries and how to work as a clan, how to use some of the knots they have already learned and he also answered the sensible questions that they had asked.
Gearoid then gave each cub a photocopy of the flags of the European Community to learn for the following week, as they will be tested on them as part of their bronze arrow badge also. Gearoid then gave everyone a final reminder about Sunday's hike, what was needed and what would be gained from attending. He then told everyone that next weeks meeting would be a Full Uniform meeting. Eoghan said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.

Group Hike & Activity Day
On Sunday 18th May, 2008, the Cub Scout Pack and Scout Troop had a Hike and Activity Day based in the Ballyvoile and Durrow area of County Waterford. Everyone arrived at O'Mahony's shop on Sunday morning ready for a day full of activities. The weather was not the sunshine we had hoped for but everyone present were well prepared. With the Clans formed up and the Scouts in a line, Gearoid did a roll call he checked to see if everyone had a flash lamp and pencil as requested. Once everyone had gotten a buddy and each of the Clans was given a leader or some Scouts, one team was called "team l 'Oreal", we headed off the few yards down the road before climbing the ditch and onto the old railway track and heading for Durrow Tunnel. Along the way we heard cries of "ouch", "oh", "dahm" etc as the Cubs, Scouts and Leaders fought their way through nettles, briars, bushes and thorns. After about twenty minutes we came to the Tunnel itself and despite it being very wet under foot, the flash lamps that everyone had came in very useful while looking at the different features of the Tunnel. Just then we heard a shout and a bark from the other end of the tunnel. This turned out to be our Group Leader" Muller" and his dog "Homer" (not name after the famous cartoon character but some writer, yea right). Who shouted and who barked we're not sure! We all then headed out of the tunnel and towards the Bridge where we all got on stomachs to look over and see the big drop below. About twenty minutes of a walk and some more "ohs" and "ouch's" saw us all arrive at Ballyvoile to be greeted by Brendan. We then headed down to the Ballyvoile Cove to have lunch before walking further up the Cove where we planned the spot to build our 100 Sand Castles for the Cubs second part of the Centenary Badge. While the Cub Pack did this Brendan, Aaron and Muller lit the bar-b-q's to show the Cubs how to cook sausages. We then began building our sandcastles with the Clan Leaders taking charge of a bucket and spade each and each Cub building four sandcastles so we had 100 built in total. Brendan and his team then gave everyone sausages once they were cooked and then a Group photo was taken around the sandcastles to be sent to headquarters. We then headed back closer to the bridge where small stones, seaweed and shells were collected for next weeks meeting. Sean Fennell then said the Cub Scout Prayer and everyone was collected by their parents.
Venture Scout Group – Information
Venture Scout Group Meeting
The next meeting is at seven o’clock, in Clonea Strand Hotel where the Group will first of all go swimming followed by bowling. This meeting will finish at the normal time of nine o’clock! It is hoped, by all that with the fine (hopefully) summer evenings and months ahead, that the section will be more outdoor orientated.
Reminder
Members of the Venture section who are going on annual camp are reminded to take stock of their Uniform, as along with everybody else attending annual camp, full and correct uniform is a must. Remember that we are not only going to be representatives of the 4th Waterford “Abbeyside” scout troop but of Scouting Ireland in general and as such we are keen to be seen and remembered for all good reasons including how we turn out!
You can contact the Abbeyside Venture Scout Group by E-Mail on venturegroup@abbeysidescoutgroup.com and Sandy/Brian will get in contact with you.
Full Uniform
A Full Uniform is Black Polished Shoes/Boots, Navy/Black Socks, Uniform Trousers, Uniform Belt, Uniform Jumper (Cubs), Uniform Shirt (Scouts), Group Neckerchief (Plus Spare), Woggle (Plus Spare), Lanyard (Scouts), Whistle (Scouts), Badges, Group Cap, Uniform Jacket (Scouts). Scouts have been advised if buying hiking boots then they should maybe try and get black ones that way they can be used as part of their uniform and save on getting shoes.
Any Venture, Scout or Cub in the Unit longer than six weeks should have this Uniform. Scouting Ireland is a Uniformed Organisation. The Scout and Cub Scout Uniforms are available from the Outdoor Adventure Store, Mc Curtain Street, Cork. Just ask the Leaders and they will help you out. If there is anyone who has been in the Cubs or Scouts and wishes to pass on their Uniform in part or full contact one of the Leaders. Thank You.
