Cub Scout Pack - News & Information

Thursday Night Cub Scout Pack Meeting

Our meeting this week started with Oisin saying the Cub Scout prayer followed by subs being taking up by Brendan. We then went out into the field to play a game of rounder's, which everybody enjoyed in the evening sunshine. It was then time to go back into the den where each clan was examined on the flags of the European Community by Geared as part of their bronze arrow badge. Results of this will be given out at next weeks meeting. Gearoid also then went through two types of secret code with the cubs as part the their bronze arrow badge, numbers instead of letters and reading words in reverse. Everyone enjoyed this and cracked the codes that they were set without any problems. A game of dodge ball was then played before our group leader Muller presented the newly appointed clan leaders and assistant clan leaders with their badges. Gearoid then reminded everyone about the times for the overnight on Saturday, Oisin said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.

Cub Scout Meetings from April onwards are to run from Seven Fifteen until Nine O'Clock.

Parents are asked to ensure their son’s are on or before time, as late arrivals tends to disrupt the meeting.

If there are any questions about the Activities or the Abbeyside Cub Scout Pack in general then you can contact Gearoid Fraher, Cub Scout Pack Section Leader on 087-2034172 or any of the other Abbeyside Leaders.

If a Cub is unable to attend any Activity, Event or Meeting, you are asked to please lets us know in advance, this can be done by text or phone on the above number.

Overnight Saturday 31/05/'08

Everyone arrived at the den at seven o'clock on Saturday night ready for a night full of fun and friendship. Once roll was taken by Gearoid, Brendan explained to the cubs all about the tents that they would be sleeping in that night, how they would have to look after them and the cost involved in replacing them if they got damaged. Each clan was then shown their tent for the overnight and the clan leader was put in charge of the tent by Gearoid. Some games were then played in the field and in the den before Gearoid and Michael brought the cubs on a hike out to the white strand to have some fresh air and collect some shells. " Then again, that's a story for another day!" When we got back to the den everyone got their eating utensils and had a generous supply of chips, sausages and some mineral to wash it down. Rumour has it that the cubs were even treated to some fun sizes as a desert before washing their plates and cups, putting tables and chairs away and getting ready for bed. Once all the cubs had settled in the tents and a few warnings had come from Gearoid and Brendan everyone eventually went to sleep. Early the following morning everyone was up and about, some more tired than others. The morning began with the saying of the cub scout prayer which is customary on a camping activity and the honour this time went to clan leader Eoghan Burke. Following breakfast in the den and everyone washing up, the leaders with the assistance of the scout showed the cubs how to take down the icelandic/Ridge Tents which they camped in the night before as they will have to do it for themselves on the county weekend in three weeks time. Everyone packed up their gear as best they could, some better than others and any time that was left over was used to play games and enjoy the sunshine while waiting to be collected by their parents.

Camping Weekend

On Friday 30th May the Scout Troop went Camping in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin, Glenshelane, Cappoquin, County Waterford. Scouts gathered at the Den at Seven. With six Scouts and four Leaders we all headed to Glenshelane with our tents, thanks to the parents who provided transport. With Patrol Leader Aaron Fraher to give advice to the Scouts as they pitched their tents. We were using Dome Tents or Hike Tents, which are great for overnights. With the Tents pitched the Scouts had some free time. During which the Scouts gathered some firewood for a Campfire. A short hike was taken with Muller and Sandy Leading the way round. The Scouts arrived back to the smell of cooking, so before food was ready to eat the Campfire was lit. The food was quickly devoured by all present. Before Scouts Ben Ryan, Ben Cliffe, Conor Harty, Owen Kirkham, James Harty and Patrol Leader Aaron Fraher all headed to bed they sat and chatted around the Campfire.

A foggy but warm Saturday morning brought an early start for some of the Scouts as they got their times mixed up. At the real eight o’clock a sound filled the air, it was that of Muller ‘playing’ the Bugle. With everyone up and ready for the day ahead. Breakfast was the first order of business after which some more wood was put on the campfire for use later. The Scouts then walked up to the tower. When returning to the Cabin the Scouts got ready to a little backwoods cooking using fruits and chocolate, these proved to be most enjoyable. It was soon time for lunch, which Brendan cooked, it was getting close to time to take down the tents and head back to the Village and Abbeyside Scout Den.

Once back at the Scout Den, the Scouts had to put up a few Ridge Tents for the Cub Scout Pack Camping Night. The Scouts and Leaders quickly put up the Ridge Tents and then their own tents for another night under canvas.

Dinner was take out Chinese followed by a very well deserved rest. The plan for the rest of the evening was to head to the Cinema to see the New Indiana Jones film, which everyone enjoyed. The scouts returned back to the Scout Den and soon headed for a well deserved night sleep.

Sunday morning was a lot more relaxed with the warm sun soon being felt inside the tents as well as outside. The Scouts rose and ate breakfast as the Cubs did and started with striking camp (taking down the tens). The Cubs were shown by Leaders and Scouts how to take down the Ridge Tents and how they are to be packed away. As soon as the gear was stored the Scouts started to head for home. Well done to all the Scouts who helped pitch the tents for the Cubs, Aaron Fraher PL, Ben Ryan, Owen Kirkham, Conor Harty, James Harty, and Joe Conway PL who joined us on Sunday Morning and helped us out in between his phone calls from Ferrybank Scout Troop.

Thanks also to who helped out Leaders, Gearoid, Sandy, Brian, and Brendan.
