25th March Scout Notes 2006
Saturday night at the scout den was a celebratory one! Both the cub and scout sections got down to the serious business of celebrating our award which was received in the St’ Patrick’s day parade. For the occasion the den had a small make over with streamers etc placed about the den and the trophy which was won was displayed prominently. The cub section was the first to arrive at the den and while most of the cubs sat down to watch a video the clan leaders, Owen and Adam along with leader Muller, went to the chipper for burgers and chips for all. This fine fare was washed down with plentiful supplies of soft drinks already in place at the den. Soon the scouts arrived looking very well in what must be the best uniform display in a long while. They too soon got into the party mood after some announcements before hand by the leaders. While not all the scouts could have been or were involved in the preparations for the Patrick’s day float those who were went immediately to the chipper where they were treated to the best of chips by the leaders. Those remaining back in the den undertook some difficult quiz type activity and some watched a video for a while. It is fair to say that the celebrations which took place in the den went down well with all concerned and when a group of people get together with determination and a will to succeed, success can happen. Well done to all.
At the scout meeting some important upcoming events and changes within the troop were announced. It is intended to form a patrol made up of some of the more senior scouts which will allow these scouts to pursue some more adventurous programmes appropriate to their age and abilities. Those involved al agreed it would be a good idea even if at the start they were a little bit apprehensive! Because of this move one or two of the patrols will now have vacancies for patrol leaders and assistant leaders and some of the scouts have been sounded out in regard to filling these positions. More news on these developments next week. At the ending of both cub and scout meetings “good deed primers” were handed out to all. The idea behind these is that each cub and scout would do some good deeds for someone during the week and get that person to then sign their card. This task is one which is being undertaken by scouts and cubs all over the country not only to promote scouting but to promote a sense of friendliness and co-operation between people. The cub and scout with the most, good deeds signed up for on their card/s will be in line to receive a special prize! On Sunday next the 2nd of April the Leaders and Patrol Leaders will be heading to Fota Scout Campsite to check out the facilities there with regard to annual camp which will be held here in the summer. The following Sunday the 9th of April the entire troop both cubs and scouts along with parents will be heading to Mount Melleray to take part in a Troop Fun Day. This activity will involve taking part in an orienteering event that is suitable for all regardless of age or whatever level of fitness or map reading skills you possess. We encourage the whole family to come along and take part at your own pace in what may turn out to be just the beginning of some similar type events through out the coming year! The views around this part of Melleray are spectacular. So even if that’s all you turn out for, turn out for that! The month of April finishes up with our catering crew going to Melleray scout centre to cater over the weekend for whoever happens to be staying there. So all in all quite a busy month ahead for all involved with the 4th Waterford “Abbeyside” Troop.
