Abbeyside Scout Group & Cub Pack Notes 11th September 2006

4th Waterford Unit, Abbeyside Scout Group Notes 110906

With a new Scout year already upon us we though a reminder of the past 12 months would be in order.

September saw those at the 4th who were in Switzerland on Annual Camp 2005 recounting their stories to all around the village. Of the gentle strolls to the swimming pool in Adelboden, of the fireworks “both in and out” of doors. The leisurely and relaxing rafting trip with Geoff, Paddy’s fine cooking skills, Kieran and David’s planned trip to Scotland, and all the other activity packed days and nights that were enjoyed by all, spent in Switzerland. The rest of September saw the Troop getting back in action as both Cub and Scout Sections were up and running.

October had the Unit getting ready to celebrate 75 years of Scouting in Abbeyside. Plans were under way for a Civic Reception in Honour of Scouting in Abbeyside. The had Leaders Old and New getting back in action, the Unit saw Eamonn Terry jumping in at the deep end as a Leader. Work was about to start on the much-awaited Cabin in Glenshelane Scout Campsite, much to the delight of all.

November brought the much awaited Civic Reception where Leaders, Scouts both past and present along with friends of “The Old 4th Waterford” joining Dignitaries to Celebrate this landmark event. The Annual Members Mass was held with a reception afterwards in the Friary College, where Scouts recounted tales of bygone Camps, Hikes, Competitions, Events and Campfires filled the air. Some of these stories differ somewhat from what was put on paper in the Troop Log Books all those years before.

December arrived with news that the New Uniform was now readily available at the Scout Shop or as it is known as now “The Outdoor Adventure Store”. A small band made the journey to Cork City to be kitted out.

January and 2006 brought another busy month around the Scout Den, with the Indoor Cooking Competition, Patrol Leader Of The Year, Scout Of The Year, and The Patrol Of The Year. The Patrol Of The Year is presented with a very special Trophy called the N.L.B., this stands for N. James Nugent, L. Liam F. Lanigan, B. Padraig De Burca all Past/Former Scout Leaders of the 4th Waterford Unit, Abbeyside Scout Group, Scouting Ireland. This unique Trophy is personalized with Items belonging to these Leaders thus giving lending their names to it. Annual Registration kept the Leaders and Group Council busy with form filling and computer work make sure everyone’s details were correct. Annual Camp 2006 was in everyone’s thoughts and the activities being focused on over the next few months would be with Camp 2006 Fota Island in mind, cooking, camping and the outdoors. This month saw the Cabin, in the now Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin, standing for all to see and building work on the shower and Toilet block start. First Aid was being revised by Brain, Eamonn and Brendan thanks to the Guides as well as Warden Training in Mount Melleray with Abbeyside being put back on the active list for Crew in the Scout Centre.

February, painting starts in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin as the first, of many coats of varnish and wood stain, are put on the new Timber Cabin by our Work Crew. Some of the Work Crew who helped over the coming months were Jenny, Sandra, Mary, Geraldine, Gearoid, Kieran, Conor, Brian ‘Muller’, Jimmy, Brian, Fintan, Kieran, Eamonn, and Brendan. All were kept going with gallons of Fintan’s tea and biscuits. Other more qualified people who have worked on the Cabin were Tomas Walsh (snr), Sean Walsh, Michael Power, Patrick Power and Peter Moynihan. Thanks to everyone for their time and effort. A bus full of Cubs, Scouts and Leaders headed to the big smoke, Dublin, for the Outdoor Adventure Show in the RDS and then a tour of GAA HQ at Croke Park.

March another busy month as a Social Night was held in the Park Hotel, Dungarvan organised by ‘Scouts’ John O’Donnell and Paddy Murphy, well Done Lads all that training comes in handy sometimes. Back in the Den and the Scouts, Cubs and Leaders are busy themselves putting more of that training to use as they get ready for the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, and something very special so special it won an Award. An Award winning float was produced that showed all the activities that Scout and Cubs undertake, well done all next year again for 100 years of Scouting Worldwide.

April, busy, busy, busy. The month starts with the Leaders and Patrol Leaders going to view the Campsite for Annual Camp 2006, Fota Island Cottage & Campsite, Fota Island, Co. Cork. All were well pleased. Next was a visit to Waterford Airport and the Coastguard Air Sea Rescue Base where a tour was given and everybody got to see the Sikorsky EI-SAR for themselves. This was closely followed by a Fun Day Out Orienteering in Mount Melleray, a Troop Walking hike from Fadawagga to Glenshelane, Crew in Mount Melleray and painting in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin.

May, started with Patrol Hikes, a Cub trip to the Cinema and over nights to family homes, the Scouts also stayed in family homes over two weekends, well they stayed with the Brasil and Lawless family’s. The Troop finished off the month with a visit to the Fire Station where fire officer’s Paul Moynihan and Philip Dunne showed the Cubs and Scouts the equipment carried and the Tenders.

June and the longer evenings saw the Cub and Scout sections making full use of Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin as all meetings for the month were based there, activities that were undertaken included gorge walking, kite flying, hiking, cooking, bbq, and swimming in the warm water of the River, ask Marco and Patrick. Surfing in Tramore finished off the Cub year where Scouts and Cubs got to “Hang Ten”. A fun packed month at the 4th.

July and things can only get better. The Scout Den was a hive of activity as the countdown to Annual Camp 2006 Fota Island goes to days away rather than weeks away. Tents were unpacked and packed, pegs checked, guys, poles, pots, pans, patrol boxes all checked and double-checked. A Troop Weekend to Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin, where Fr. O’Riordan joined us for Mass. All to soon Annual Camp 2006 Fota Island was upon us. In brief on Annual Camp the Scouts, visited the Navy, Tralee, Killarney, Cobh, Cork City, Cork Airport, Fota Wildlife Park, The Aquadome Tralee, Titanic Historic Walk, Cobh Heritage Centre, Mahon Point, Cobh’s Historic Sights, A Boat Trip Round Cobh Harbour, oh and went for a few swims in Cobh. Busy Camp I nearly forgot cooked the own meals. On Annual Camp we invested one Leader and recruited another.

That just about covers the year just gone what does the next hold. Just to remind you all that the Cub and Scout Meetings Start back on the 16th September at seven for Cubs and Eight for Scouts.
