Hiking Day in Glenshelane
A one day/overnight event for any adult leader of any section (18 years plus) will be held at Glenshelane Scout Campsite and Cabin on Saturday 27th of December 2008 beginning at ten thirty in the morning. Leaders from the 4th Waterford “Abbeyside” troop will be on hand to take leaders on specific hikes in the vicinity of the campsite which would be suited for the various ages within particular sections. Later on in the evening a campfire will take place where campfire songs will be taught by qualified staff. The only cost involved will be the price of a meal, perhaps €10. Overnight accommodation will be in the cabin on site or for the hardier out there you may bring a tent and perhaps two sleeping bags for the cold! This will be a fun event!

Cub Scout Pack - News & Information
Monday Night Cub Section Meeting
Last Monday night’s meeting was one of games, lots of games! The main reason for this was that leaders Brian and Sandy had to attend the AGM of the scout county in
Thursday Night Cub Section Meeting
Our meeting this week started with Aaron saying the Cub Scout prayer followed by subs being taken up by assistant leader Mandy. Gearoid then gave talk to the cub pack on respect and how he not only wanted each and every cub to respect each other, themselves and the leaders but that he wanted them to respect everybody. Equally he told the cubs that they too would be respected by all the leaders and everyone would get along provided they showed respect to the leaders. Gearoid then went through the country code with the cubs as some of them even though they had been on hikes before had forgotten it last Sunday in Portlaw and had to be reminded as to what the country code was all about. The main part of the meeting was then taken up doing a craft challenge where the cubs in their clans had to make a model of a campsite in their clans using such materials as cardboard, coloured paper , string, play dough, paint, lolly pop sticks, cocktail sticks and of course the two most important items teamwork and imagination. Each clan came up with different questions and some different variations of campsites but a great deal of fun was had by all and some great team efforts put in. Well done to all the lads. Once we had cleaned up and made sure the den was spic and span Gearoid gave out some merit badge work to be completed by the cubs for this coming week. He then told all the cubs who joined in September that they should have a uniform at this stage and that the next meeting would be a full uniform meeting. Aaron then said the final prayer and everyone was dismissed.

Scout Troop – News & Information
Saturday Scout Troop Meeting
Seven o’clock started this week’s meeting with Patrol Formation and the saying of the Scout Prayer, as usual we had some late arrivals who continue to be late for the meeting. At the Patrol Corners the Scouts spoke about the Menu for the Indoor Cooking Competition on Sunday November 30th. Eamonn and Michael collected subs. Joe, Gearoid, Eamonn, and Michael then ran some relay games with a difference as the Patrols raced against each other with a small football under their chins, behind their knees, and between their knees. If a Scout failed to carry the ball as required a stop go penalty was imposed by a Leader. ‘Dizzy Izzy’ was then played and as always creates a great laugh. Crab soccer had the Troop divided into two teams, with shoes taken off after a few minutes as a safety precaution. The scouts went back to their Patrols to get their Patrol Boxes and put tape on their gear so there would be no confusion about who was responsible for what gear. The Gear was quickly put away and the boxes returned to the store. A straight line in height order was called for which took longer to get than it should have, this the followed a extended numbering off in twos, again it was one or two Scouts failing to stand still or stand in a straight line or even stay quiet while the others called out their numbers. When this was eventually done a few games of squares were played which was good fun. To finish off the meeting the ever popular game of ‘Dodge Ball’ was played with everyone getting stuck in. Before the meeting finished upcoming events were covered, which included the ‘Indoor Cooking Competition’, ‘Group Mass’ and ‘Catering Crew’ etc. The Scout Prayer was said and all present were reminded that next week’s meeting is Full Uniform that means no white socks, no white runners and all badges on their uniform. Also that the meeting starts at seven sharp.
