A Leader
A Leader is a person who, week after week, month after month, provides fun, adventure, challenge, and learning for our active children.
A Leader hurries home, tries to eat a quick meal, puts on a uniform while answering the phone five times, and arrives smiling to meet the youngsters, all in 30 minutes.
A Leader gives up weekends and home comforts to teach children about woodcraft, nature and camaraderie.
A Leader is somebody who can put up a tent in the rain and dark, find lost boots, dry wet bedding, handle asthma, blisters, homesickness, and children’s excitement on four hours sleep, and go home talking of the next camp.
A Leader is a person who waits in the cold with the last child, whose parents forgot the time.
A Leader attends meetings to learn and plan, has an expandable spare room and a head full of ideas.
A Leader can lead a song, teach a skill, play a game, perform a ceremony, listen to a child, and say a prayer.
A Leader willingly fills the gap so that a child will not be let down.
A Leader is committed, caring, hardworking, sturdy, strong, reliable, with a wealth of knowledge, a store of skills, and a heart of gold.
A Leader gets little spoken thanks, but knows the spirit is passed on.

Cub Scout Pack - News & Information
Waterford Scout County – Cub Quiz 2008
The St Augustine’s Friary College, Duckspool, was the place to be last Sunday afternoon if you were a member of the 4th Waterford Cub Pack for the Waterford Scout County Cub Quiz. Just over one hundred Cubs from all over Waterford Scout County came to participate including Cubs from the Monday Night Section and Thursday Night Section of the 4th. The Quiz was started by C.P.C.’s Cubs Anthony Purcell and Gearoid Fraher. Ten rounds of questions were asked with six questions in each round. At the half way point Dunhill were leading, Faithlegg second, with one of the teams from the Abbeyside Monday Night Section in third. By the end of the quiz Dunhill held on for victory by six points but a tie-break round had to be played for third spot with four teams finishing on 45 pts. The winners of this were the team from Abbeyside's Monday Night Section. Well done to all. Prizes for the first three teams were then presented by C.P.C for cubs Gearoid Fraher as well as a certificate to all troops who participated. County Commissioner Brian Fanning picked out the best joker award which went to Faithlegg. People who were thanked by Gearoid on the day included Mr. Joe Moynihan for the use of the Friary College, Baumann Jewellers for sponsoring the prizes, leaders and scouts of the 4th Waterford for putting up road signs, Brendan for his help during the week, County Commissioner Brian Fanning for his attendance and C.P.C. Anthony Purcell for setting the questions. Also to the ladies who provided the catering on the day and also corrected the questions. Hope everyone enjoyed the day.

Scout Troop – News & Information
Saturday Scout Troop Meeting
Gearóid got the Scouts into Patrol Formation for the beginning of this week’s meeting. Saying the Scout Prayer got the meeting formally. The Patrols went to the corners and talked about how they felt that last week’s Indoor Cooking Competition went and what they would change for the next time. Attendance, Annual Registration and 12 Days was done by Gearoid and Michael while Brendan sorted through the Scouts Progress Cards. All present were reminded, if they had not already done so, to return their 12 Days tickets and that their Annual Registration is overdue for payment. A few games of North, South, East and West were played by Brendan, before Michael organised Heads N Harps and then Volleyball. For the last few minutes of the meeting Brendan spoke of some of the items covered in the publication ‘Fifty Years of Abbeyside Scouting’ 1930 – 1980, showing the first two Uniforms and Pictures of those in the Unit during those years. The Troop were then asked if they would be interested in participating in ‘Secret Santa’ where each person who wants to take part would buy a present with a max value of €5.00, wrap it and bring it down to next week’s meeting where all those gifts would be divided out amongst the Scouts who had brought in a present, obviously not the one they brought in. A Group weekend away in January to Kilkenny was also spoken about, which would include an overnight stay in a Castle for the Scouts. The Annual Group Mass was spoken about with the Scouts to be at the Den in Full Uniform, no white runners or white socks please, at 11:15 am, for 12:00 Mass. After Mass we will be making some presentations back in the den, followed by each Patrol going for something to eat bring €5.00 approx for this and then to the Cinema for a Film again €5.00 needed here. If you want to get sweets etc at the Cinema then you will also need to bring money for that. Gearóid then asked for help from the older Scouts with the Waterford Scout County Cub Quiz the following day. The meeting ended with the Scout Prayer before everyone was dismissed and went home.
New Members
New members are always welcome so if there is anyone who may be interested in joining the Scouts have an adult call along with you to the meeting and talk to Brendan. The Scout age is from 10½ years to 15/16 years. Scout Meetings are on a Saturday night from seven to nine.
